Liberty | Are there any doctors/hospitals that can charge lower costs because they don't accept insurance or medicare? |
I don't think that we're going to be able to afford health insurance once we get out of the military, and I'm trying to brainstorm options.
I know that Aflac offers ala cart insurance items, like cancer insurance at a lower cost, and since I have a family history of that, I'm going to take that out, but I don't think that I can have a full policy.
Are there any doctors with lower costs that operate on a no insurance/no medicare basis?

I'd get some insurance with a high deductible, like $5,000 and higher copays. That is, real insurance, not the medical plans that we call insurance. These policies are generally much lower cost and you are covered if something catastrophic happens. NASE has some policies that might appeal to you. You can usually find one for a few hundred dollars a month, but it's worth it.
Oh and BTW AFLAC is not medical insurance, it is supplementary coverage.
When I was self-employed I negotiated directly with doctors and have settled some bills for half the cost. You usually can get about a third off if you negotiate in advance of treatment and are paying cash. This is because doctors are gaming the insurance system. Insurance pays Customary and Reasonable expenses. If they charge more than insurance will pay the C&R average goes up, even though they never expect to see it, if you pay cash, the insurance companies will never find out. Welcome to America's "great" health care system.
Also, in some states being late in paying medical bills cannot affect your credit score. |

Doctors and hospitals offer discounts for those who pay cash. It is usually 10% to 30% off the total bill. |

You really owe it to yourself and your family to contact a local independent broker or agent to see what is available and what the costs are. Going without insurance is OK if you don't have an accident or catastrophic event, but it is not a good life plan.
Employer group insurance could be another option for you. |

Most doctors automatically give a cash discount if you are a cash patient (no insurance). However, if you get sick, have any kind of serious illness, have to have surgery, be admitted to the hospital, need a steady dose of prescription meds, etc...then you are pretty much screwed financially if you are a cash patient because it will get real expensive very quick.
EDIT: In regards to COBRA - it is extremely expensive but very necessary at times. We paid over $800 a month for COBRA because we could not have a lapse in coverage due to my mother being in the middle of her chemotherapy treatment for a cancer diagnosis. |

I read an article recently about how you need to negotiate the charges. I've been told you can even negotiate them after you've had whatever it is done. If I find that article I will add it to my answer. |

Why not pay for continued coverage under COBRA until you get a new job with benefits? Or, if your family is lower income, look for state subsidized care, especially for your children.
If you are in the military, won't you be eligible for VA care after you leave service? I think you need to talk with the benefits officer at your base to find out what options you have.
By the way, the single disease only policies, such as cancer, are not a good deal. They often prey on fear of the disease, and do not give as much benefit back as they cost. You would be better off putting your money on a good quality general health insurance policy, which will cover cancer costs, as well as all the preventive care that would help you avoid cancer or detect it sooner.
Good luck. |
