Jim C | Are there insurance policies that protect a person from being sued? |
I mean can you buy a policy that would defray the costs of litigation and/or a settlement if someone decided to sue you for any reason? |

yes most certainly there is. its called liability insurance, now it covers owners of businesses like bars, restaurants and most other public businesss, if your talkiing about personal lawsuits thats probably not going to happen or be worth the premium. |

It depends. Not for any reason. Like if you sell someone a car and giv ethem an expressed warranty that can be proven, and they decide to sue you, its not likely you're gonna find a policy to protect you from that. However, if you are a professional of some sort, there are forms of insurance you can buy to protect you from these sort of things. For normal, run of the mill people, there are things called umbrella policies that provide excess liability over and above what your home and auto insurance provide.
This is not a question that can be answered simply. There are many types of insurance policies and it would take me hours and I could build a whole website on what they will and won't cover. So here's my suggestion, go to yellowpages.com, look up insurance, find an ad that says they have an insurance advisor or certified insurance counselor (CIC). Call them, and discuss this matter over the phone, or make an appointment to see them in person to talk to them about your many different options.
Good luck! |

NOTHING protects someone from being sued. Well, very little, in very specific situations. BUT, there ARE policies that pay defense costs and judgements, or settlements. They are called LIABILITY policies.
There IS no "we cover everything" liability policy. There are about 30 different kinds of liability policies - everything from dog groomer's professional liability, to medical malpractice, to the regular slip-and-fall coverage on a homeowners policy, to weird, tailored policies like paternity liability (really expensive, don't ask).
You need to sit down with your agent, and discuss which exposures are most likely to occur for you, and discuss what is the best way to handle them. |

You can purchase a Homeowner's/Tenant's/Condo Unit Owner's policy to protect you against personal and premises liability policy. Then you would purchase an Auto Policy to cover your actions arising from the use, ownership or operation of a vehicle, and an Aircraft Liability policy to cover your actions arising from the use, ownership or operation of an aicraft. You can then purchase a commercial liability policy to protect you against bodily injury and property damage caused by your business actions, and a Professional Liability policy to cover financial loss caused by your error or failure to provide competent professional services. You can then purchase an Umbrella Liability policy to top up your limits and provide drop down coverage in case the primary policy denies the claim. You should quite adequately protected after all of these policies are in force.
Of course these policies only cover compensatory damages caused by accidental actions. Any punitive damages, or injuries/property damages you intentionally cause, are not covered, and there is no policy you can purchase that would cover them. |

You can get either general liability if it is for your business or you can get personal liability if it used to cover yourself and your personal property. Now somethings might not be covered. For example if you did something on purpose, like you threw a rock a neightbors window, because you were angry with them. That might not be covered. It depends on the insurance company. |

the only policy (to my knowledge) that covers a person from being sued is "Errors and Omissions" insurance..but that only pertains to Real Estate transactions. |
