Nope.
The average family plan is $1200 a month for low/no deductible coverage.
Most of the ads your seeing are probably for "plans", not "insurance" - which means they are selling you a LIST, and won't ever pay out anything.
With health insurance, you get exactly what you pay for. And clearly, your employer is picking up more than half the tab - you've got a good deal there. Want proof? Just call one of those numbers, and tell them to put the deal in writing, and see what they say. |

You should ALWAYS seek private insurance over a group (employer sponsored) policy. Why? 1st of all, YOU will control your family's benefits. You won't have to stay in a job you hate just to keep your benefits. Here is a nightmare scenario: You have a group plan through your employer....You develop a serious health condition...For some reason you lose that group coverage (u get fired, your employer discontinues the plan, etc) now you CAN'T get your own policy because you have a serious health issue. It's not your employer's responsibility to ensure your family...It's YOURS. So I would recommend contacting a local insurance broker. Someone who represents SEVERAL companies. This individual can shop the entire marketplace and find the deal that is best for YOU, instead of being stuck with what an employer mandates. Some companies in particular to look into are Time (under the band name Assurant) and also World. Both are SOLID companies. Also inquire about a Health Savings Account. This is where you can put away money to cover your deductible in a tax favored account. You will save on your income taxes, lower your premiums, and accumulate retirement savings all tax deferred.
Also...Sorry Ford Y but you are 100% WRONG. Individual coverage ALWAYS cost less than a group plan. Why? Because group plans cover people who have more serious health issues, making the cost for the entire group go up. The problem is that if your employer is paying part of the total premium, it might SEEM less than an individual plan simply because you are not paying the total cost, only a portion. But in reality the TRUE cost is more than an individual plan. Proof? All you have to do is talk to someone who had a group plan and then went on COBRA. ( an option to stay on an employer's plan for a limited time, even though you no longer work for the company) The cost of the plan skyrockets. Why? Because now the employee is asked to pay the ENTIRE premium, and not just the portion they were paying prior to leaving the company. So NO group plans are not less expensive. |

Would you really by a health plan from the Orange Glo and Mighty Putty guy?
They have 'insured' benefits in SOME cases and in others they're just pure discount plans. And on the insured benefits they have they may tell you they'll pay $500 or even $1,000 per day in a hospital, but if it cost $5,000 a day you'll still need to come up with the rest. But with the pure discount plans you pay all of it. Believe me when I say I have at least a person a day calling into my office because they had one of these plans and just got stuck with $50,000, $30,000, or higher medical bills because they thought they were covered.
