Around how much could I save switching from a $500 deductible to $1000 deductible?
Currently my husband and I pay about $212 a month for our car insurance.... he has a 2002 Explorer and I have a 2007 VW Jetta. He had an accident back in 2006 and we are both only 20, almost 21 but I was told by my agent that even though we are young, since we are married, we get the discount as if we were 25. I was talking to some friends recently who are also married and some only pay like $85-$105 a month which makes me sick b/c we pay so much. Someone told me that switching from a $500 deductible to $1000 could possibly save us some money?? Does anyone know around how much this could save us?? And how long does his accident affect our insurance, like how many years??

Gee, if only there were somebody you could call who would give you an exact answer.

Seriously just call your agent and get a real answer instead of a bunch of guesses.

Only the agent that you are with can properly answer these questions b/c there are so many different policys out there, but yes the higher your deductible is the more you will save but also did your friend tell you if they have had any recent accidents or tickets and what about there credit scores? Do they also have ther house insurance thru the same company which can also result inot discounts so call your insurance people and dicuss this with them and be frank that you need your insurance to come down to this price a month what discounts do they offer and how to quailfy for them and if they can't assit you then start finding one that can.

Call your agent or the insurance company. They can tell you exactly how much you'll save on the premium.

Baby #2 due 2/20/09!!
There's so many things that can make your insurance different prices. The type of car you drive, where you live (even one street over from you may be a lower rate), you age, driving record, and coverages. Not only your deductible, but you liability limits.

Do you have another kind of policy with your company? If you have your renters or homeowners with another company, try combining them. You save big money by having the policies together.

Raising your deductible may save you money, but probably not $100 a month. You'll have to wait for your accident to fall off of your driving record, or shop other companies. Just make sure to compare apples to apples.

Consider dropping collision or maybe both comprehensive & collision on the 2002. It's 6 years old now, soon to be 7 when the 2009's come out, and probably not worth much now that SUV prices are plummeting. You don't even need to call your agent to see how much this would save, just look at your policy to see how much you're being charged for these coverages.

Probably about 10% of the collisin and comp premiums.

In general the accident affects you 3 years from the date of the accident so If the accident was in 06/04 it would affect you until 06/07.

$212.00 monthly is too much you should be paying around $150-$190 monthly with a $1,000 ded.

Make sure your loss payees are ok with you switching to $1,000 deductible. Some of them INSIST on having $500.00 on your policy.

The 2007 Jetta is the highest rated vehicle so since your husband is the one with the accident he will automatically be paired with the Jetta on the insurance policy. There's nothing you can do about that. Hence the $150-$190 monthly policy.
