i'm guessing you are getting your health insurance through an employer. basically, when a major "life event" occurs, you should be able to make changes to your benefits (e.g., add dependents). major life events occur all the time (marriages, divorce, death, birth, etc), and when making these changes, you're not bound by the normal enrollment window rules. so you should be able to get coverage for your child.
definitely contact your hr department to have them help out. i'm guessing the person you talked to was confused. |

Call your HR department and let them know that you called within the first 31 days to have your son added to your health plan.
Just because there is a wait on the Social Security number for the baby does not mean that the insurance company has the right to deny coverage providing that you did call them to apply within that first 31 days.
You may have to show some kind of proof of the initial contact in order for them to concede but if you can then it shouldn't be a problem. |

I really hope you got the name of the person when you called the first time - because you CAN file a complaint in writing, to your state insurance commissioner.
They say this ALL THE TIME, they want the actual SS number. But they SHOULD have noted the file when you called the first time. So they SHOULD be adding this baby on.
Ask to talk to a supervisor. Tell them, hey, you tried adding the baby right away, you were told no, wait for the SS number (which is standard, btw), and when you got the SS number, they refused under the "30 day" bit. They CAN do this. And if they don't, file the complaint with your state insurance commissioner. |

You called within 31 days to report the birth of your child.
Most calls are recorded for quality assurance, ask to have your calls pulled and evaluated.
The Social Security # is rarely received within 30 days of birth.
Fight this. Do not let this go, and if the supervisor can't help you, ask to speak with their supervisor, all the way up the food chain. The angry squeaky wheel (you) will get the grease. |
