Bad sides to insurance companies.?
Can you give me some links for cons about insurance companies, i.e. denying claims, costs, bad coverage, things like that?

Im writting an argumentative paper on the down sides of insurance companies (socialized systems dont have them) and how they are created be profitable not to provide the best care.

i also need an opposing argument so any link supporting the best features of insurance companies would also be helpful

Two Fingered Salute
It never ceases to amaze me how some people on here vote themselves ‘top contributor’ and then believe their own publicity.

Yes most socialized systems do have private health insurance as an option. A two tier system? yes of course it is …. Commercial/State.

“The poor slobs who are on socialized medicine, have a six month wait in the UK for their open heart surgery, and die in emergency rooms.”

Even if this is true (and of course commercial hospitals NEVER make mistakes do they… oh hang on…. if they don’t why is US medical malpractice insurance so expensive?), would these ‘poor slobs’ be any better off in a non-social healthcare system?

If so, how ?

The idea that somehow this is worse than in countries that don’t have any social health system astounds me, but then what do you expect from someone who, quote;

“resent[s] my social security tax going to pay benefits for retirees and disabled persons”

What a lovely sentiment!

The truth is in the UK, private health care is used much more for ‘non-emergency’ treatment than anything else. Having seen the level of care given to my parents 1 x cancer (now full remission) 1 x stroke (treatment in days) I can tell you it works at least as often as it fails and I’ll take social conscience over the “money first treatment second” of a purely commercial healthcare system.

Forget the right wing rhetoric of insurance agents who make their living out selling you health insurance. Of course they don’t want social healthcare, Turkeys don’t vote for Christmas.

The facts speak for themselves, in the US life expectancy/infant mortality rates are worse than in almost any nation with a social healthcare system (including Cuba for flips sake).

You want a con of the purely commercial healthcare system… I think that’s a fairly good one.
You might also want to look up ‘health insurance fraud’ …. that’s pretty hard to do in a state system where it’s available to all anyway.

Oh and in case you think there’s self interest on my part…
a) I have had private healthcare cover (total cover, as part of my salary) for at least 20 years now, and am lucky enough to earn more than enough not to have to worry about such things from a selfish perspective.
b) in case you think those are biased statistics, the source is the CIA.

I dont' know of any links or resources that have not already been mentioned, but insurance companies, just like every other company on the planet are accountable to their shareholders. A business is in business to make money. That's the long and short of it. Have you ever walked into Wal-Mart and asked for a free pair of jeans? They would laugh at you. Maybe you should write a paper on how Wal-mart and other retail stores are only in business for profit and not providing a goodwill service of giving away free stuff.

Socialized systems still have insruance companies. In Canada we have free universal health care, however there is a ton of things that are not covered under that health care and even the stuff that is covered is partnered with a massive waiting list for treatments, so various forms of health insurance are still very relavent and in high demand. I'm not sure what sources you are using, but I would love to chat with you about the 10 month wait I just had to see a knee specialist, and now I just started the 7 month wait to get an MRI, then back on the waiting list to see the specialist again. I have put on roughly 40 lbs. in the last year while on this waiting list because it's painful to excersize. Taking the free treatments and waiting may end up causing me more health issues down the road because of my weight problems until I get my knee fixed...

Pro's of insurance companies?

- you will rarely pay more than 20% of the total cost of the benefit amount in most cases throughout the lifetime of the policy (depending on the type of policy). IE: I have a whole life insurance policy for $100,000. I will pay roughly $12,000 over the next 18 years for it and it will be completely paid off. I'm paying roughly 12% of the total benefit amount and until they find a fountain of young, there is a less than 1% chance that this claim will not pay out at some point.
- having someone else pay for your medical bills, etc is far better than selling your house (roughly 45% of forclosures are due to sickness, death or disability and not enough insurance in place to cover the mortgage payments) or collapsing your retirement plan to do it.
- Insurance doesn't cure an illness, however it will releive the stress of the financial ramafications of that illness. Money problems cause stress, stress causes sickness...if you're already sick do you want to get sicker? Insurance can solve money problems.
- insurance gives you peace of mind in knowning that if someting happens you and your family will be taken care of. Don't know about you, but that helps me sleep a little better at night.
- insurance gives people the freedom of choice. IF a person is diagnosed with cancer, most have the only option of sitting at home on a waiting lsit where I am from. There have been people that have litterally died on waiting lists. If I get diagnosed with not only cancer, but 23 other illness/diseases, I will get paid a 6 figure benefit amount form the insurance company so I can do whatever I want to be comfortable, whether it's travelling for faster treatments, making sure my spouse can take time off work to spend time with me, making sure my business doesn't collapse in my absense, or taking a holiday to a tropical island where I can at least enjoy my time waiting. Part of my critical illness insurance includes access to the Best Doctors program which allows me to have access to litterally the best doctors and treatments in the world and they arrange everything...I just show up with the money (which I get from the insurance). AND...If I never make a claim I get 100% of the premiums I paid back when I cancel the policy. How can you possible say they are not providing the best care for clients? I get sick, I get a fat paycheck and the best treatment in the world. I don't get sick, I get my money back.

Con's of an insurance company?
- unfortunately most people don't take the time to actually read and understand what they are entitled to whether it be from the government, an insurance company or otherwise, so when it comes time for a claim and it's denied or they aren't covered at all, it's alot easier to blame someone else, rather than accepting the fact that it was their own mistake or lack of proper planning that got them in that prediciment. Those who understand how insurance works and have a generally positive outlook on life typically don't get 'screwed' by insurances. It's the ones that are the "the world is out to get me" types that just like to ***** and complain and are the ones with the bad 'whoa is me' stories that are getting 'screwed' in their mind becuase of their own ignorance, irresponsbilities in life or their own mistakes of cutting corners and not understanding what they are doing.
- Some insurances are not regulated by the insurance industry like Mortgage Life Insurance sold through banks. These insruances are shady products and are designed by the banks purely for profits and give

look into balance billing. If you don't use their in-network providers they make you pay roughly 80% of the bill even if you have a PPO that advertises that you can see out of network providers.

Go to your state insurance department website, they have a "complaints" section.

Socialized systems DO have insurance, and even countries with socialized health programs, ALSO have private health insurance! It becomes a two class system - the people who CAN afford private insurance and private doctors get a MUCH higher class of care, with NO waiting. The poor slobs who are on socialized medicine, have a six month wait in the UK for their open heart surgery, and die in emergency rooms.
