Beginning the search for health insurance, what to look for?
My employer does not provide health insurance and I have to buy my own. What am I looking for? It's just my wife and I, no kids, no plans to have any.

What health insurance provider is any good?
What should I expect to pay?
What should I expect to get for my money?
Would I be able to be covered for an existing condition? Not really a condition, I have a screw in my leg from an athletic injury that has to come out someday.

You may have more answers than I had questions, that would be super, as I kind of don't know what I don't know.

You should visit a local independent agent that works with the major companies in your area. Not all companies write policies in all states, and the policies of any one company will be different from state to state.

There will be hundreds of policies available to you and the agent can explain the differences. The agent can find the best policy for your situation and budget. The plans and premiums are exactly the same whether you use an agent or not.

Do not try to do this over the internet. It'll take you several days to intelligently compare all the plans available. Also, your pre-existing condition might add a rider to the policy or cause you to be declined and the agent can find out prior to you applying. Also, if you are out of the height and weight guidelines you won't know until you've applied and gone through the underwriting process.

Well, a great place to start is http://www.ehealthinsurance.com/. You can get quotes on the site, and they have a pretty good video that explains more about the different types of insurance. Blue Cross and Blue Shield are pretty good, as well as Humana. There are actually quite a few. Another option you may want to look at is your bank. Some major banks offer health insurance for their members. You want to look for one that has a lower deductible, lower co-pay, and covers the items that you think, using your own best judgement, that you would be most likely to need. For a family of 2, 25-35 in reasonably good health, and both are non-smokers, you could probably expect to pay around 350-450 a month. It will vary greatly from state to state and for person to person. It's very expensive to buy health insurance yourself. You might actually want to consider finding a job that the employer provides health insurance. Unless you are making 6 figures a year where you are now.

Aaron,

The best thing to do would be to talk to a LOCAL agent who knows the companies, the prices, and plans in your local area well. They will be able to answer those questions for you and point out other differences that you may not have thought of.

You can connect with a local agent by filling out the form at http://www.myinsurancequotes.net. A local agent will contact you and get the process started. I hope that helps you. Thanks!
