Best individual health insurance plan?
My husband and I just found out that his company is raising our medical insurance rates from $212 a month to $400 a month, so we are trying to shop around for the best rates. We have found some, but hardly any include maternity benefits, and we want that parachute just in case any "accidents" happen. Is there any plans out there cheaper than $400 with maternity, or should we just hope we don't get pregnant for a couple of years? (We plan to switch insurance in 2 years when I get a teaching job)

I don't know your ages what deductables you have, do you have drug plans, co pays if you go tot he doctor,

A good plan for my son who is 6 years old costs me almost 150 dollars a month,

I am over 50 and my health plan costs me over 600 a month just for me, not for a couple, The plan for my wife and I is over 1000 a month for us not counting our son,

So 400 a month sounds dirt cheap to me. How much is the company still paying toward it, this may be a 600 dollar plan that you get for 400.

Your local Chamber of Commerce should have a group insurance plan you can participate in (they count you as a group, whoever signs up through the Chamber) which should keep your rates low ---in the meantime, if you plan to have children one of you should get a job with insurance benefits ---if you become a teacher you will have good benefits.

Right now $400 a month for a family plan is not bad at all and is the average rate. The problem with switching to individual coverage is the risk of not being covered for pre-exisiting conditions. You're protected against much of that if you stick with the current employer offering. If you're both healthy, have no pre-existing conditions and only need catastrophic coverage in case of a major emergency then shop with Blue Cross Blue Shield for a high deductible plan. Your monthly rates will be low and you'll have coverage for major emergencies. For instance, if you went with a $3000 deductible then if you were hospitalized you'd pay $3000 out of pocket before insurance kicked in BUT, if you're not anticipating being hospitalized and you have infrequent doctor visits it could save you a lot of money. You'd simply be responsible for the cost of the doctor's visit, but since you have insurance coverage it would be for the doctor's contracted rate and would therefore protect you from outrageous pricing. Average cost of a doctor's visit could range from $35-$75 for standard visit depending on where you live, but that's not bad if you don't need to go often!

You can keep trying other carriers - sometimes you can find a plan that is slightly lower. Just search the web - below is one web site in which they show you different choices.
