they say I took my son to the hospital 3yrs ago, they can tell me the date and amount $375... but they cant tell me what hospital i "supostably" took him to, saying hospitals dont release that information, A HOSPITAL NAME!? If the collectors are being difficult, see if you can remember who your employer was at the time of the visit. try calling them and ask if they know what the insurance company name was at the time of the visit.
p.s. the fair debt collection act says they HAVE to disclose who the originator of the debt is... I think this is nation wide.
Disclosure Which Must Be Given to You by Debt Collectors
Debt Verification: Within 5 days of the collector's first communication with you, they must send you a written notice containing:
* The amount of the debt.
* The name of the creditor to whom you owe the debt.
* A statement that within 30 days after you have received the notice you can dispute the validity of the debt or any portion thereof.
* A statement that if you notify them in writing within 30 days that you dispute the debt or any part of it, they will provide you with the verification of the debt. They must send you verification of the debt.
* A statement that if you request it in writing within 30 days of receiving the notice, the collector will provide you with the name and address of the original creditor if it is different from the present creditor. |

That is wrong, I used to work for a collection agency. They have to know who hired them!! What a stupid thing to say. Send something in writing that says you dispute the bill and need more info. I would send it certified so you have proof you did so. See what happens then. |

Look over the paperwork they did send you. Look for phone numbers and ways to contact them directly. Tell them they legally have to provide you with that information. then , make copies of these things, keep black and white records of your every conversation and names of people you have talked to. Then, you need to contact your local attorney general and have them help you out, because you might be a victim of a scam, or even the collections company could be a victim and not know it. You have to be provide with everything, the amount, what was done, who did it, the doctor on duty I mean, the day and the hospital that actually saw your son. Don't send money now, if you are being scammed, then all these people really want is an account number to clean you out. If you start to get the run around, inform them you are collecting your own evidence and will talk it to the attorney general. Good Luck. Oh, You don't have to play nice either. Be assertive but not rude. Always keep your cool even when you want to say worse. |

Just tell them that they need to provide you with further proof of the debt. If they can't tell you the hospital, date of treatment etc. then the debt is not valid.
They can release the name of the hospital. There is no reason for them not to.
I wouldn't promise them one red cent till they provide you with more information. If they start harassing you, send them a certified letter asking for them not to contact you by phone on the matter. If they continue after that then report them. |

I agree with the rest too. I work for an insurance company, handling outstanding medical bills and know that we REQUIRE what is called an "itemized bill" before we will pay anything. They must present this to you- it makes no sense to pay for something you're not aware of.
