Brandon D | Bonding and Insurance question for moving truck? |
I just bought a box truck and talked to a guy at a local furniture store who said he would hire me to do all their deliveries into peoples homes as an independent contractor.
He said I must be bonded and insured to do this. Does anyone know how much this is going to cost me up front to get bonded and where I could get a good deal from? Im absolutely clueless on what type of bond I need and cost of it. Thanks |

Well, the bonding is going to be the cheap part, you can likely get the bond, for under $1,000.
Retail local delivery for a box truck, assuming you're not going more than 50 miles, are over 26, and have a spotless driving record, is probably going to cost you $8,000 for just liability.
It's not going to be about 'getting a good deal' for a startup company. It's going to be about "who is willing to do this, at all". You'll need to call some local, independent insurance agents, and get details from "the guy" on exactly what kind of bond you need. Likely, you'll also need some state filings, because you're hauling for others for a fee. Get the insurance requirements in writing - because *I* think you're going to need:
Commercial auto liability
Commercial general liability (to cover the loading and unloading of your truck)
Workers comp (to cover you and whoever helps you load and unload)
Motor truck cargo (to cover the value of the stuff in your truck, if it gets stolen or something)
Plus that bond they're talking about - most likely fidelity. |
