Your insurance agent should be helping you estimate how much insurance you need on your home. How many square feet it is?
We look at rebuilding costs in your area. The value of your property should not be a question. The policy provides for 75% of the dwelling amount will be added for personal property.
Call some companies and get some quotes. The agents will know how much insurance you need. You do not need to figure it out.
If you talking to an agent and they are asking you these questions, I would find a new agent. An agent should be able to give you information how much insurance you need. |

why would your insurance company ask YOU how much coverage you want?? Seems a little weird to me.
Im a Farmers Insurance agent, and our system will automatically calculate for you how much coverage you need based on the squarefootage of your property and the characteristics of the home.
If there is no system calculator, they should know that you just calculate based on $150-200 per square feet, depending on the construction material and year built of the home.
You can find out how much replacement value you need for your home from your lender too. They will have a minimum requirement for replacement cost, and this is what you go after. They might also say that your need a % for replacement cost, which means that you need to make sure that the policy you get covers either 125% or 150% extended replacement cost. If you are dealing with a company/agent who doesnt know how to calculate how much you need, or doesnt know how to explain coverage/construction cost to you, then Id be looking elsewhere. Call a local Farmers Insurance agent. No headache there! they will do EVERYTHING for you! |

You would want to insure the house for the cost to rebuild the house should it be totally destroyed. Unfortunately, besides consulting with a home buillder, it is quite difficult for the general public to determine this on their own (any answers here which recommend adding $x to the market value of your house should be immediately ignored as rubbish). This is where the services of an insurance broker becomes invaluable. They have the knowledge and tools to determine what the replacement cost of your house is. They can also shop amongst their markets for the best rate. |

Rebuilding costs are not necessarily the same as the cost of a house and so you should allow a little more, usually 20% extra should be sufficient. |
