Buying health insurance, looking for advice?
My nephew has been diagnosed with a bleeding disorder. My brother and his wife are both self employed but earn too much for Medicaid and government run disability programs. They always bought their own insurance. But after his son's condition the insurance gave them an estimate of $2300 a month in order to buy a plan for their kid. This is because his medications are extremely expensive. My brother said it costs about $160K a year. My brother doesn't know what he should do. He needs his wife at his office so her getting another job is not really an option because they couldn't afford to pay someone for that kind of job. My brother is devastated because if he is supposed pay that much for insurance he might as well go on wellfare. I find it ridiculous that two hard working people like this can't afford to buy insurance for their sick kid in this country. Does anyone know what they should do?

They've been shopping around and that's the lowest rate they got on insurance.

Each state has a children's health insurance plan (CHIP) that is much more lenient than Medicaid. It is designed for kids such as your nephew. Search out "your state" CHIP program on the internet to find the plan in your area and contact those people. Chances are his medical condition will qualify him without an income limit.

I agree that they should look into the SCHIP plan in your state.

If by some chance your nephew doesn't qualify for the SCHIP plan, your sister-in-law is going to have to get a job with benefits. With medications totaling $160K a year, there's absolutely no way of finding affordable private coverage. (Honestly, I'm quite surprised that they received a quote as low as $2300 a month...is that for the whole family, or just your nephew?)

Your brother says that his wife getting another job isn't really an option, but quite honestly I see it as one of their *only* options. Or else your brother will have to give up his self-employed status and find another job himself.

In their situation, purchasing a private policy themselves isn't a realistic option. They either have to qualify for a government program or get group benefits through an employer. Hopefully your nephew qualifies for your state's SCHIP...otherwise your brother and his wife are going to have to decide whether keeping their own business and being self-employed is a bigger priority than having coverage for their son. Personally, I'd be out looking for a new job ASAP.

Have them go to http://www.myinsurancequotes.net and click their state at the bottom of the page. There might be a high risk pool who has to accept them for less money than that, in their state. I hope that helps!

My heart goes out to your family. I am a mother with a son who requires expensive medications, and I also have to work with my husband's company (without pay) to make ends meet. So I have a taste of this situation.

In addition to looking into SCHIPS, please contact a medical school that is within driving distance. Many medical schools offer free or low cost medical care. I can't say whether or not they would pay for prescriptions, but it's worth looking into.

Can your nephew's prescriptions be sourced overseas? We source our prescriptions internationally from legitimate pharmacies, and the cost is LESS than insurance co-pay. The prescriptions work as well - or better - than when we purchased them in the U.S. Please see my site: http://www.health-insurance-low-cost.net/Prescriptions.htm.

I am sick of hearing these types of stories. When will our legislators and presidential candidates start talking about HEALTH CARE???

Well, they can pay out of pocket, as the meds will likely be excluded. See, you can't place a bet AFTER the horse race - and this kid needing $160,000 a year of medication, well, that's what you're looking to do. Pay in a fraction of it, pay out the huge amount. They'd go broke.

See if they can sign him up under their state Children's Health Insurance plan. That's one option. Or the state might have a high risk health pool, but the premiums might not be any cheaper, and the condition might be excluded.

Or, they can talk to the docs, and see if there's an effective, older medication that the kid can take, at a drastically reduced cost. Most of the new meds aren't significantly different performance wise.

Yes our country is sorely lacking in making sure everyone has adequate health coverage. I represent a company that provides medical and dental discount programs. It is not insurance but is a good fit for those in your situation. Please visit www.mybenefitsplus.com/bbahr. You will probably be most interested in the Total Health Plan which is just $39.95 a month. I also have a Yahoo group called medicalbenefits and feel free to post any questions you may have. I hope to hear from you.
