This sounds like some kind of scam or extortion scheme to me.
You need to get a copy of the accident report indicating that you were not at fault so you have proof. You should also send a copy of said report to this company and advise them that they will soon be having to pay you for their harassment if they don't cease and desist this extortion attempt.
With accident report in hand you may wish to file a complaint with your States Insurance Board and possibly with your states attorney general's office.
Under no circumstances should you ignore any court summons. Failure to respond to a court summons or notice of suit can result in a default judgment against you.
This is typical activity on the part of collection agencies and law firms, they often file claims and suits against anyone and everyone involved in an accident in the hopes of obtaining a default judgment against anyone who fails to respond.
Just the fact that you were unlicensed or unsinsured in no way indicates that you are liable for anything.
Bottom feeders is what they are. Especially if you were obviously "Not at Fault".

The question is, were you actually covered by insurance at that time and did you report it to your insurance company? If you were, contact the insurance company. If not, then you will need to provide your own defense.
In some states if you have an accident with no insurance or bond, your license is suspended until the accident is settled. In California if someone gets a court judgement against you for more than $500, your license is suspended until the judgement is paid.
So don't let them get a default judgement against you by ignoring any notices about court. |

Are they a collection agency? Normally, you can't get your license suspended for an unpaid debt. Only the DMV or DA's office can suspend you license. They do it for not paying back child support, or bouncing a check to the DMV or other state office, and that's about it.
If this accident wasn't your fault, then what the heck is the $11,000 for? Sounds like someone sued you, and got a judgement, for SOMETHING. |

No. They do not have the power to do that, only a state or city government can take away a legal right. However, if you were never prosecuted for driving without a license, they could bring civil charges against you. I would contact your lawyer, or at least someone at Legal Aid and discuss the specifics of the situation with them. God Bless. |

This company has sent a threatening letter to my brother saying he owes 14,000 for some thing fron 7/4/10 and we don't have a clue about it, it's almost like they pulled his name out of a hat and said hey, lets screw with this guy! Sad part is that my Brother is mentall handicapped and has done nothing to anyone that we know of. My Mom is calling the BBB first thing tomorrow, so be leary of ths company. |
