COBRA Health Insurance for one week?
I'm quitting my job on October 24th (with a large employer) and am starting a job on the 27th. I won't have insurance with the new job until November 1. This means my insurance will end at midnight on the 24th with Company A and begin at midnight on the 1st with Company B. That's one whole week for those who can't do math. However, I'm an extremely low risk person. Is it possible to get COBRA retroactively if something were to happen that one week? I ask because I don't want to pay COBRA for one month, but I'd be more than willing to pay the price if something catastrophic (God forbid) were to happen that week.
Additional Details
I'm pretty sure termination of employment is covered by COBRA. I gave my two weeks. I'm not getting fired on the 24th.

First, health coverage through an employer usually ends at the end of the month in which employment is terminated. Are you sure your coverage ends at midnight the 24th? That so does not sound right to me.

Regardless, it would take longer than a week for COBRA to mail you the forms. By that time you'd know if you needed it or not, and yes, it would be retroactive to the termination date.

Good luck at your new job!

Check your current employer. Health insurance premiums are generally paid monthly. It's quite possible that your insurance would be in effect intil Nov. 1.

If you are leaving your old employer on good terms, chances are they would let you reimburse them for one month of insurance if they had to keep you on the policy an extra month.

As long as your termination was not due to gross negligence on your part and your employer has at least 20 full-time employees, you should be offered COBRA. The employer has 30 days to notify the current insurance of the termination and they will then have 14 days to get the COBRA paperwork to you. By that time, you will have the new insurance. Just make SURE that you have the coverage with the new employer before you decline the COBRA. If you were to elect it, the COBRA coverage would be retroactive back to the date you terminated the group coverage with the old employer. Here is a link that will give you all the details:

Its 60 days from date of notice on the Cobra, but it doesn't matter in your situation anyway.

You termination date has nothing to do with your personal situation. Companies can choose to start people on the 1st of the month and end on the last day of the month or use a date in the middle of the month, which means you term on the last date of employment. I have tons of clients and its about 50-50 what they choose to do.

Also, the only time you don't get Cobra (assuming more than 20 employees) is due to "gross negligence" termination. And the courts have pretty much held that unless you are led out of there in handcuffs AND convicted, they have to offer you Cobra.

Yes. From the time you get the paperwork, you have 30 days to accept or decline.
