Jaclyn...Macy arrived 1/21/09 | Can I be added to my boyfriends health insurance? |
Me and my boyfriend are in a commited relationship, and have a daughter on the way. I am still on my parents insurance, but that will expire at the end of the year. Our plans our for me to stay at home with the baby, and him work. Therefore I wont be able to be employed and earn my own health insurance. Can I be added onto my boyfriends health insurance even if we are not married? I know each plan may differ, but I want to see if with any plan it's possible before I call and ask about it. Thanks! Additional Details We are in a commited relationship. It is my choice not to get married right now. I wont be pregnant after my parents expires. Also he claims me as a dependent for tax purposes. I got to stay on my parents for this long due to school. |

Some plans allow you to be listed if you are legally his dependent for tax purposes.
For tax purposes:
1. live together all year.
2. he provides more than half of your support.
3. you make less than $3500.
4. your relationship is not against local law.
Chances are, your insurance is due to your parents still being able to claim you as a dependent on their return.
Marriage is always a good idea. |

Some insurance companies allow common law marriages, and or domestic partners. He's gonna have to ask his HR department.

Yes some plans allow domestic partners to be added to a plan. But many do not and that is one of the reasons gay want to be able to marry their partner. |

Most companies do not recognize a domestic partnership. Your boyfriend will have to talk to his HR dept. However, most companies require that you be married to be added to his health insurance policy. |

Nope. You'll have to be married to be added on.
Most employers don't want the boyfriend to keep adding on a pregnant girlfriend every six months - or more frequently - so they require heterosexual couples to prove they are in a committed relationship, by committing. That would be, getting married.
And honey, if you aren't married, you aren't in a committed relationship. Make sure he knows that. Single parenthood (ie, a woman giving birth without being married) is the surest path to lifelong poverty in the USA, for a woman. |

Jaclyn...#1 due 02/01/09, Home insurance is actually very flexible. I'm not familiar with all the details of my homeowners policy, but my home insurance agent is always helpful. Try contacting your agent or a homeowners agent in your town. http://www.americaschoicetoday.com/Home-Insurance.html They will be able to assist you. |

If you are in college, you may want to check out health insurance programs that are written through your school. United Healthcare has a plan available at many US schools. These student injury and illness plans provide wide ranging coverage and are designed to be affordable for college students. To check if your school is participating, go to www.UHCSR.com and enter your school name in the search box. You might also be interested in joining the American College Student Association (ACSA), a national organization for college students. They have lots of member benefits, including student health insurance. Their membership fee is affordable. |
