Can I be denied insurance?
I am currently getting health insurance from Health Partners through my mom's employer, but I will be losing my coverage at the end of the month, since I got married. I applied to continue coverage through Health Partners on an individual plan and was denied. I was recently told my someone they thought I couldn't be denied by someone who was already providing insurance for me. Is this true or what? Insurance is too confusing!

I'm not familiar with Health Partners. Is that a U.S. insurer? Your situation does not sound like COBRA would apply. That being the case, normal underwriting requirements would apply. That means that if you have a medical condition that is uninsurable, the insurance company has no obligation to accept your application.

Your best options would be:

Add yourself to your husband's insurance, if he has any, through his employer. Some companies allow this following circumstances such as a marriage or adoption.

Obtain employment with a company that provides health insurance to its employees. Some companies such as Wal-Mart offer coverage to their full-time employees after a certain period of time. Although you may pay the majority of the cost of this coverage, you should still be able to qualify for it.

See if your local Blue Cross/Blue Shield plan offers an individual policy for people that have been covered under a group plan but are no longer eligible. With some of these plans, you can obtain coverage as long as you can show that you have been covered under a group plan for a specific period of time.

Good luck with your situation.

Any individual plan can deny you even if you are currently on the same company's plan. The only time they cannot deny you is with a portability plan. For a portability plan you must accept and exhaust COBRA if offered. Also, the plans are limited and the premium starts at over $1000 per month.

A plan will not deny you just because you have insurance.

Visit a local agent that works with all the major companies in your area. The agent can find the best plan for your situation and budget. You'll need to find out why you were denied and tell the agent so they can help. There is no extra charge using an agent.

You can be denied for an individual policy. If you have any medical conditions which the insurer determines would be financially risky for them to cover, they don't have to take you.

As someone above mentioned, the only time a policy would "have" to take you is through a portability policy. And you have to be otherwise eligible for the policy, according to the rules. (Exhausting COBRA, etc.) Those plans, of course, are expensive because generally only an unhealthy person with no other options would enroll in one.

Your best option would be to enroll in a plan through either your own or your husband's employer. They would not be able to decline you for your medical history.

~~If you do not have a history or current health problem, you will not have a problem getting your own policy.

You may have been denied because of current coverage, when they deny you, they are suppose to tell you why.~~

If you are in college, you may want to check out health insurance programs that are written through your school. United Healthcare has a plan available at many US schools. These student injury and illness plans provide wide ranging coverage and are designed to be affordable for college students. To check if your school is participating, go to www.UHCSR.com and enter your school name in the search box. You might also be interested in joining the American College Student Association (ACSA), a national organization for college students. They have lots of member benefits, including student health insurance. Their membership fee is affordable.

If you're married you are no longer your mother's dependent. Therefore, it would likely be the case that you could not be on her plan. AND, if you get on her plan and they later find out that you're married they could deny the claims.

Do your homework on that before you end up with a false sense of security thinking you're covered when in fact you aren't.

Not true. There are only a couple states that are "guaranteed issue", and even in those states, they'll jack the price up so high that you won't be able to afford it (can you say, $2,000 a month?)

You cannot be denied coverage under a GROUP insurance plan. But for individual health insurance, all bets are off - they can pick and choose who they take, even if they currently have you under a group plan, they are free to deny you individual coverage.
