No, unless you're her legal guardian (as in, she's legally incompetant).
That doesn't stop slimey collection agents from trying to collect from you anyway. Just call their bluff, and tell them, fine, sue me. See you in court.
They won't do it, because one adult can't be held responsible for another adult's bills unless they are married and in a community property state. |

Can't remember? Well, if you want to give those nice collections folks a run for their money, you should ask them to produce the documentation with your signature stating you accepted responsibility for the charges. If they are unable to do so, send them a letter (and keep a copy) informing them that you are not responsible for the debt and will consider any additional phone calls as simple harassment.
You have the right to ask collection agencies to stop calling under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA.) You can get more info on the Federal Trade Commission web site: http://www.ftc.gov/os/statutes/fcrajump.shtm
Sometimes letting these unscrupulous collectors know that you're familiar with your rights is enough; however, you can actually seek damages from violators and informing them of your awareness of this usually gets rid of those who are playing fast and loose with the facts.

How did the hospital bill collectors even get your name and phone number? Were you listed as next of kin possibly? You are not responsible for a 23 yr old woman's medical bills. Tell them to stop calling you or your lawyer will sue them for harrassment!! |

I cant see how they can even threaten you with that She is not a child any more and hasn't been for quiet some time. As already stated if you never signed any thing to accept the responsibility of the bill they don't have a leg to stand on. make your daughter pay her own way. If the pressure continues get a solicitor to write a letter for you yes it will cost. Maybe you could speak to some one like Fair trading Consumer affairs for advice. good luck |
