Can I buy back my vehicle fom my insurance company - after it is totaled?
If so, how much will they sell it to me for? (assuming they paid me $2,000) What if it had a value of $6,000? Is there some kind of 'formula' they use?
Additional Details
I don't want my car back. I don't have a car that was in an accident. I want to know what is possible *IF* I ever total a car. I currently have 2 of the same vehicles. A 'totaled' car can save $$$ hundreds in parts.

Well, it's based on the "salvage" value of the car - what a junk yard would buy it back from them at. Normally, it's $750 to $2,000, depending on the make, model, and how many decent body parts you have left.

Yes, you can keep the car . . . they would subtract the salvage value from the total paid out. You'd still have to turn in the title, and they'd get a salvage title issued to you.

You negotiate keeping the car, before the claim is settled. Once they've taken the car from you, you can't actually recover it - it probably goes straight to the junk yard, and the parts start coming off.

Yes, most insurance companies will allow you to buy back a total. There is something that is called "salvage value" which is the value left after an item is destroyed or fully depreciated. The company most likely will sell it to you for the vehicle's salvage value. In most cases, salvage value is nominal in nature. I would not say that is 100% the case, but most will sell it back to you. In some states, you may have to obtain a "salvage title" from the department of motor vehicles so that any future buyers will be aware that the car was totalled at one time.

Yes, I've done it myself. It's called buying the salvage.
The price the adjuster deems the value ( the amount the insurance company will get for the vehicle at the salvage auction) is considered the salvage value).
They don't mind at all, just ask what the salvage value is set at, and that you'd like to buy it back. This is also the part of the money that they won't pay you once you redeem it. So, they give you a check and your car back.
Now here's the kicker. Go to an aftermarket new parts store like Ce rti-fit ( look it up on the internet), and the costs are about 25% of the dealer for the same thing.

If you wan to keep a vehicle after it is totaled the insurance company will just pay you the retail value of the car minus the salvage value. There is no formula for that. Ask the adj, it is a fairly common practice. They will let you know the salvage value and what steps you have to follow to get a salvage title.

yes in fact you have the first right of salvage

Make an offer of 500 to 1000 they should take it. What else are they going to do with it but scrap it. If nothing else they will tell you to take a flying leap but at least you tried.

Insuranceman
Just to add what others have already said.......once you get a "salvage title", you might have a hard time finding an insurance company that will insure the vehicle for PHYSICAL DAMAGE coverages, i.e., Collision and Other Than Collision (comprehensive) coverages.

There shouldn't be any problems getting a company to insure for liability only.

And, why do you want the wrecked car BACK?? Is there something sentimental about it or do you have a custom stereo or something? Granted, you wouldn't have a car payment every month and that might be important to you.

Good luck and I hope this helps you make your decision about buying back the salvage.

i would just buy a different car, they will charge u a higher bill for towing & storage. My car got totaled 5 yrs ago i was pd 1,400.00 then they totaled it fixed it tried to sell it back for 7,700.00. i wouldn't trust them. IMO i did give up salvage rights, that may make a difference?

alwaysbme
Yes, you can offer to buy back, the price is based on the adjuster propose salvage price and most cases insurance company will sell it to whom give the highest offer.

murrayc
you need to approach the right person. once you find that person, make a "low ball" offer. they might just go for it.

Depend what kind or Insurance and Company you have, but normally yes you can do, they have to give the car back to you like a sale, and if there is any difference; they have to give to you too. Talk directly with any Insurance Representative from your Insurance Company and ask if you have the right to considerate this deal. Good. Look and God Bless You.
