Can I cancel my Health insurance at work, because it is too expensive?
We enrolled for Health insurance thru my husbands work, and we were not told how much the payments would be. We were told to wait and see what they took out of his paycheck, and that would be the payment.

Now we are paying over $500 a month, for a family of four, and on only one income. We are unable to pay our bills like water, and electric, and have to make considerable cuts in our grocery shopping.

We decided to cancel our insurance, and get our kids on the state program, but when my husband asked the HR department about cancelling insurance due to financial hardship, they told him he would have to wait 6 months until it was open enrollment. We can't wait that long. Are they allowed to do this?

Ghost of Zeuz
"Allowed"? They are REQUIRED to do that.

Welcome to Obamacare.

Judy
You might have to wait till open enrollment.
Ask for a higher deductible plan, they are much, much cheaper.
Just keep that deductible in a savings account - for that purpose.
Also consider a catastrophic plan with an extremely high deductible.

But do brace yourself.
Insurance costs and healthcare costs are about to go up, and up, and up.
Do not go without healthcare coverage.
Welcome to the ObamaNation.

No.

Due to IRS regulations, you can only get off your group insurance, if you lose your job, or during open enrollment.

This isn't the insurance company or the employer's rule, this is regulated by the IRS.

Nnnnn Ggggg
Yes they can do this, you are not generally allowed to change your insurance plan through an employer unless a "major life changing event" has occured (marriage, death, birth) or during open enrollment.

MP
Why did you sign up without knowing the cost? Would you give someone your credit card at the grocery store and just wait for the statement to know how much you were billed?

It's a moot point though, because 500 seems like a fair price depending on your location and benefits

They are allowed and required to do it. They have no choice.

Also, $500 a month for a family of four is incredibly inexpensive. That comes to only $125 per month per person. Health insurance normally costs $200-$1000 per month per person in the U.S.

The state program is probably only for those who cannot get insurance at work, at any price. If your employer offers any health insurance, no matter how expensive, that alone might disqualify you from the state program.

"We were told to wait and see what they took out of his paycheck, and that would be the payment." This is problem one. How do you sign up for something when you don't know the cost? If it's within 30 days of the open enrollment (or regular enrollment) they should be able to back it out. I could if the group was my client.

Yes they are allowed to do this. In fact, almost every employer on Earth does that. This is not a new concept.

Flower
Yes that is how it works. You have to wait until the open enrollment period which is only once a year to make the change. That is probably in the contract with your employer. How do your kids qualify for Medicaid if you do not? Medicaid, your state health plan, will look at all household income and assets to qualify your children but income limits are quite low. If I wre you I would contact someone at your state insurance commission to see if you have any legal recourse to disenroll yourselves from the plan but your husband might have to withdraw also since he is the qualifying employee for the plan.
