I quit a job because my Mother , age 82, was seriously ill and hospitalized for three weeks, there was nothing the doctors could do to help her condition, she is not a candidate for any kind of surgery. She was released upon the condition that she received 24 hour care. I quit my job to care for her at home rather than place her in a nursing home. The unemployment office notified me I was eligible for an additional 13 weeks unemployment from my previous job since I am unemployed now, so I filed a claim. Does anyone know if they will consider my reason for quitting to care for my elderly Mother. Does anyone know before I receive a decision if I am able to draw for the reason I explained? Thanks |

In California you'll get a letter in the mail for a phone interview if your unemployment was turned down. In that interview you'll be asked why you quit your last job. You might not receive any benefits before they decide if you qualify or not. I think you will. |

Yes. That is a very legitimate reason for quitting and you are entitled to 15 weeks “Sick Pay” to take care of an immediate family member. But remember this, they are an insurance company and insurance companies never want to pay. At least that’s the case in Canada. They might try and say you don’t qualify but you do and you will have to appeal their decision. Could take a while to get paid but don’t give up. Most people will just give up and that’s what they want. Fill out the appeal form and you will get paid because they never want to actually go to amediation. They will just pay you instead. |

Typically, a voluntary quit will disqualify you from collecting unemployment. However, if your former employer doesn't contest it, you may be able to collect. |

Caregiving takes a special person. (you) depending on which state you live in, some pay a family member to care for a sick relative( consider th ecost of 24/7 nursing care) I'd check out social services, office for the aging..be persistent. they are overwhelmed but will eventually get back to you. I don't know what state you're in but in my state unemployment is only for people who were fired questionably or laid off.
I doubt you can collect unemployment, but there are probably other forms of welfare that you qualify for if your mother is your dependent. |

A friend of mine recently was fired from his job after missing two consecutive days. He did not bring in a Doctor's excuse to cover his two days missed. Like anyone else, when he is sick he doesn't always go to the Doctor and he didn't see the importance of doing so. He filed for Unemployment and MDES disqualified him due to Misconduct. There was never any misconduct on his part. He spoke to Labor Relations and they informed him there was never any misconduct on his part or anything to that nature on his records while employed with their company. Why does the State word a decision which disqualifies someone from drawing Unemployment after he worked a total of 34 years? |
