Yes if your car is really insured and you have a SORN reference number then you can do it via the internet as insurance and MOT details are on the DVLA database. |

If you apply online then you can - that is if you have actually got insurance for your car.
To qualify you do not need to physically show the documents - the DVLA will check against an online database to check you have insurance.

Anna - are you buying the car? If so the dealer could/should get the tax disc but you will need the insurance certificate. You won't be able to drive it whilst waiting for the disc to come.

Not exactly sure of your insurance situation. Is this your first car, and has insurance only recently been done on-line?
I recently had to renew my car tax, and intended to do it at Post Office, as I feel they need the support. Unfortunately I couldn't find my insurance certificate, so I had to do it online. I did it on a Friday evening, and the tax disc came on the following Tuesday, which I thought was good service, although they do tell you to allow five working days.
Do you also have MoT for this car? If your insurance is new, I don't know how long it takes to get through to database to allow you to get disc on-line.

not in the uk no, you have to produce your mot and insurance, and if you havnt got a renewal for your tax then you have to take your reg document too |

hi, my friend has just had the exact same problem. she had it insured but it was not taxed as they didn't have the insurance certificate through yet.
they got stopped on the way home from picking up the car by the police for not having tax and they were just given a 7 day waiver, which meant that they had to take the insurance certificate and tax down to the police station within 7 days and no further action would be taken.
the insurance certificate should come through within 3-5 working days and you can tax it as soon as you get it. you can do the tax online and it is instant even if you don't have the disc, or you can do it at the post office.
i really wouldn't worry too much if you are just driving the car home, the police and the tax office do understand.
