Can I get cash instead of repairs for my car insurance claim?
The damage to the car is from hail and I have already received an appraisal but I would like to know if I can get a check from my insurance company instead of getting the repairs done. Basically, do I have to spend the money on repairs or can I keep it?
I went to the drive through claim office and they cut me a check then and there... The dont give you as much as they would give the body shop-for the very reason of what you are trying to do... :) They gave me the check and said if the body shop I chose had more damage they would give any additional money to the shop. Just remember if they pay you now and you dont get it fixed they wont pay out for another hail claim. They will want proof that you fixed the first one...

A variation on this has been asked several times in the past week.
Bottom line - if there's no lender, sure. But you won't get cost of repair, you'll get 'depreciation' for the damage, and then the insurance company will cancel the collision and comprehensive from your policy.

If you take the cash option if offered you will get the actual cash value not the total amount. This is seen often in Hail claims. They will factor in depreciation until the repairs are done. If you take the money you will not be able to get the car repaired in the future. And it will great impact the resale value of your car. Make a smart choice. Good Luck.
