Can I get my insurance company to pay for my tummy tuck as a medical necessity?
I have lost over 140 pounds and have a lot of excess skin on my belly. It is a problem when I run, as it can hang.

Most insurers will conclude this is a cosmetic procedure; since most health insurance policies exclude cosmetic procedures, it's likely your insurer will decline to pay.

Review your policy or Certificate of Insurance for details; pay close attention to the Exclusions section -- you're looking for a cosmetic surgery exclusion, or perhaps also for an exclusion for procedures that are not medically necessary. There may even be a tummy tuck exclusion, so it wouldn't matter if it was medically necessary or not.

It depends on your insurance company and the troubles you have from the excess skin ... for example if you keep getting skin infections.

If your insurance does not cover it, consider paying for it yourself and having it done in Brazil. It will run thousands less than in the USA (including airfare) and there are some amazing cosmetic surgeons there. It's a huge industry there.

Nina
Most likely not because it is considered "cosmetic." It is still worth calling the insurance company but I know someone that has the same problem and they had good insurance and they still would not cover it.

Sorry.

Get tummy tuck surgery in India. Cosmetic Surgery is very cheap in India. There is one company that is very famous in India that arranges cosmetic surgery for foreigners in India. They are called the Forerunners Healthcare. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories.

I have also read that they arrange financing for American and Canadian patients, as cosmetic surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. The cost savings are incredible. As a doctor I personally believe that your cosmetic surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available here is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

My cousin got a couple of cosmetic surgery procedures in India like the breast reduction, tummy tuck and facelift through the forerunners healthcare. She is more than very happy with the results. She just paid 30% of the amount she was quoted in USA and is all praise for this forerunners healthcare company. I personally have seen the wonderful results and am particularly impressed with the kind of quality care she got from this company. I hope this helps.

Your best bet is to document any discomfort it is causing you, such as rashes. Find a plastic surgeon that works with bariatric patients a lot; they'll know what to do.

Call them. No one here knows what kind of insurance you have or what kind of medical conditions you might have. Call the insurance company.

Absolutely !! But you must have medical reason, not just that it hangs when running... You need to document any rashes, (photos, dates. etc..) infection, and sores that this extra skin IS causing... You family physician will tell you this or find a new physician !!

Your family physician will need to know of these rashes, sores, etc... as well, to which he / she will recommend you to a surgeon near you who performs this type of surgery. They will submit contact your insurance provider before hand to ensure this will be covered... This is the dr.'s job.. They will do it for you or find a Dr. with their head out of their a s s !

Good luck... soon you will be running flab free !! : )

you best bet is to speak to them directly

Very doubtful. This is a cosmetic procedure. Unless you need it to restore your looks after an accident, insurance won't cover it.

nilajaj
yeah, i would say call them and if you can get the doctor to say it is a necessity that would help too.

socaldollbaby73
I agree to an extent with Mbrcatz, sorry if I misspelled. I don't think you can get them too...it does depend on your insurance company though. It's more of a cosmetic thing to do that....it would be very hard to prove as a medical necessity. Congrats on the weight loss though....very impressive. I am having a hell of a time losing 30. nothing seems to be working for me. good luck and I hope you get the answers from your insurance company that you're looking for!

mbrcatz
Most likely not - you can solve the sag problem by wrapping some spandex fabric around your middle.

I hope your insurance will cover it. In case it doesn't cover you TT, and you can't afford such surgery in the US, you can have it done in latin america. You will pay a fraction of price if you to go to Brasil, Colombia, Argentina or Bolivia. I went to Bolivia with the medical tourism group MakeoverTravel on March 2010 for a breast augmentation and liposuction of stomach, abdominal flanks, back and inner thigh, and fat injection (brazilian butt lift), my all package including cost me US$5,500 including hotel for 12 days, and all my analysis b I had my breast done because i was not happy with my body. After having a child my breast were saggy and looked like a flat tire at the age of 26, I knew i had to do something about it! I was very scared of surgery but i went thru with it. When you get out of surgery your chests feels so heavy that you have to be elevated in order to be in a comfortable position, I personally took 2 weeks before i started doing things on my own but after a month i was a happy camper! All of my clothes fit better and I feel very attractive. I can shop for the nice bras and feel better in linguerie. I love my cleavage but sometimes it does get in the way when i am trying to use a conservative look. I did not loose any sensation on my breast, I actually gained sensation. I would recommend the breast augmentation to anyone who is unhappy with their breast. It has boosted my confidence! I checked the prices of TT with MakeoverTravel and they provide all inlusive package for TT, the cost is of $2,700 that includes hotel stay and transportation, it's very affordable, my experiemce with them was incredible i highly recommend them!
