oneswtsmile | Can I get unemployment (in CA) if I quit? ? |
I've been working for my last company for a little over 2 years. I resigned 2-3 months ago because I felt they were just taking advantage of me. I was doing 2 persons' work (even my boss agreed with that) and getting 30K a year. He wasn't able to get me a better raise (I started at 28K/yr) because upper management wouldn't approve. I was practically running the dept (my boss had a dual role running 2 departments but he just focused on 1 in particular while I did ALL the work for the other!). I would go in at 7AM and leave at 11PM sometimes just to catch up with all the work. It did take a toll on my health because I got sick a lot. Basically, I believe for the amount of work I was doing, my pay was pathetic! My wage would be consider hard to live on in the bay area. I live on my own.
Btw .... I'm 21, still pursuing a degree (taking distance learning courses), and I'm a hard worker (all my ex coworkers can vouch for me that without me they are lost).
FYI.. After I left the company, the whole dept fell apart because there was a mass amount of paperwork that needed attention and they couldn't get enough manpower and meet deadlines! Additional Details EDD states you can still get unemployment when you quit if its for a good reason... not sure if this is good enough. I am actively searching. |

You have "prove" a legitimate reason for leaving. I collected unemployment after I left my teaching job, but we had moved away from the area. My "reason" was because my husband had been transferred.
Call your local EDD office and find out what their acceptable reasons are. Your former employer will have the opportunity to fight it. |

you typically are not eligible for UC benefits if you voluntarily leave your job - doesn;t matter how tough the work is or how little you are paid - your situation is no different than millions of other people |

I doubt it - CA law states weekly unemployment
insurance payments for workers who lose their job
through no fault of their own. Quitting does not fit that description. Unemployment is for people who get laid off.

It doesn't matter what kind of worker you were or how well liked you are by co-workers, the fact of the matter is you QUIT. Typically to get unemployment benefits you have to have lost your job through no fault of your own, and that is not your case.
In this economy people would prefer too much work to not enough, so I doubt you will reap any benefits (or sympathy) from voluntarily giving up your income. |

Nope, you're not going to qualify for unemployment benefits. You quit your job. That's not a good reason, sorry.
You MIGHT be able to get benefits, if you quit to take care of your spouse with cancer. But not because, "they weren't paying me enough and the job was hard." |
