Can I keep my health insurance if I move out?
I'm 22 years old and have already graduated college (as much as I'm doing for now that is). Currently I'm covered by my father's bluecross/shield from his work, but it's about time I moved out with my girlfriend. we both work 40 hours a week at decent jobs but between my car payments/insurance/ect, and her bills, we'll pretty much be scraping by as it is, and I really doubt we will be able to afford to live if we're each getting 50 bucks a week taken out of our checks for health insurance right now.

Was wondering if I'm able to keep my parents insurance until that age 24(I think) limit even though I'm no longer a student. We're not moving out of state, but we're going to have a lease so there's no real way to lie to the insurance company and say we're still at home. If not we're probably just going to have to go uninsured and hope for the best. Hate to because I've always been the responsible type. But we've cut down on bills as much as we can. I cant get rid of my car because I would only get enough for it to pay off the loan and have no money saved for another one. Any ideas would be appreciated. Good news appreciated more =)

That's something you (or your father) needs to ask bluecross blueshield.

It will depend on what state your father lives/works in. Massachusetts will cover you for more than a year after graduation. Other states stop covering you as soon as you graduate.

You should also look into just what health plans your employer offers, and whether the company pays much of it - it might end up costing you a lot less than the $100 you are expecting.

If you can't afford to move out yet and your parents don't mind you staying, I think that staying home for another year or so is better than going without insurance.

If you already graduated then you're likely not legitimately on the plan as is. It only covers you (usually) if you're in school full time.

Under the new health care law you may stay on your parents insurance to age 26 only if you have no employer health insurance available. That begins in September although some insurance companies have made the change already. You don't have to be a student. Check the new health bill on the website.

No, you won't be able to keep your insurance. In order to qualify under your dad's plan, you must be a dependent - meaning living in his home. Most plans I've heard of that allow a child over the age of 18 require that child to be actively enrolled in college, so you may not be covered now.

However, depending on your state's policies, once you move out and are no longer "dependent" you may qualify for medical assistance through the state. Definitely check that out and see if you and your girlfriend will qualify for your own separate plan.

Other thoughts... check into income-based housing. That will make for a lower rent payment where you might be able to get insurance through your job.

Hope this helps!
