If your current employer is required to offer you COBRA coverage, then you can continue for up to 18 months, AT YOUR COST, under your current plan.

hightechchic
With most group plans (but not ALL), you would be given the option to keep your current coverage under COBRA for up to 18 months.

You can read the details on the Dept. of Labor web site: http://www.dol.gov/dol/topic/health-plans/index.htm

However, you even if you keep this coverage, you would be required to pay the premium in full every month (plus an additional 2% administrative fee.) Most people have at least 50% of their health insurance premiums paid by their employer and they really have no idea how much their health insurance costs. You'll want to check into that.

As a general rule, barring any major medical issues (and what constitutes a major medical issue for an insurance company may differ greatly from your own estimation), you can probably get similiar coverage at a cheaper price by purchasing an individual policy.

Not unless you take out the policy personally. Your monthly premium would probably increase dramatically though.

The answer is no. Unless your insurance company sells individual plans you are out of luck. However your new employer might have a plan available to you that will cover preexisting conditions.
Good Luck

Yes, You can get coverage with BlueCross or another company. But you would have to pay the whole premium. If you have a job line up, soon, you can get a short option policy. until you policy is effective with your new job. Hope this help.

ISOintelligentlife gave an excellent, thoughtful answer!
My two cents worth would be to keep in mind that Portability coverage may be available to you if COBRA is not an option, and you have serious pre-existing conditions that would prohibit you from an individual plan as has been suggested. Portability requires no medical underwriting, the downside being the very high cost.

Sometimes you will get coverage for another 30 days. They will be glad to let you continue for a non-group rate price. It could be 500-1000 bucks a month depending on the plan or coverage. It may not be as good as the one from work either. Benefits and co-pays could be way different. I would stay there till I had a job all lined up with another company with a decent health plan. You could call blue cross and ask them what the rates are in the area that you live, if you are really curious.
