Can an homee insurance company cancel you for a fire claim??
We have had 2 house fires in the last 12 years. Can they cancel us or not renew?

Carissa Q
Home insurance covers lots of different things. I'm not familiar with all the details of my policy, but my homeowners insurance agent is always a phone call away. Try calling your agent or a homeowners agent in your city. http://www.usinsuranceadvisor.com/Home-Insurance.html They should be able to assist you.

In most states, yes, they can. Most of the time, they can "nonrenew" your policy. It's a bit harder to "cancel" mid term, they have to come up with a different excuse.

In a couple states, you CANNOT cancel the policy for claims. But the companies will find a way, anyway - either by raising your deductible extra high, or coming out to do an inspection and giving you a list of "recommendations" that must be completed within 30 days, or finding "increased hazards" to use as an excuse to cancel you.

acermill
They can cancel you for any reason they want, or for no reason at all.

Yes. 2 house fires in 12 years is rare. The average homeowner has one claim every 7 years, and they are not fire claims. I used to work for a major insurance carrier and they would probably have non-renewed the policy. The best thing you can do is pay your bills on time because if they are late and your policy cancels, they will most likely not reinstate it.

~~Your chances are somewhat better if you've been with the same insurance company the whole twelve years. Otherwise, you will probably be canceled. They do not have to carry anyone they don't want too.~~

Yes. Insurance companies are not obligated to cover you for any reason.

Sandy S
Yes, they can do either one they choose.
