Helen L | Can an insurance company withold a no claims certificate when you still owe them money? |
I have a dispute with an insurance company, I have now got a new insurance company but still owe money to my old insurance company. My new Insurance Co. want proof of my NCD but my old Insurance Co will not give it until I pay what I owe. Can they withold this certificate? |
|

Yes, they are justified in with-holding the certificate until you pay. What I suggest you do is settle the bill now, and if the dispute is later resolved in your favour, you will be given a refund of the disputed amount anyway. What exactly is the dispute about? Have you contacted the Financial Ombudsman Service for them to carry out an independent review of the dispute (if it cannot be resolved between you and the insurer)? |

Why don't you just pay them!!! |

Firstly you have to pay up then you can ask for the NCD. As simple as that! xD LOL |

Technically, yes as you still owe them money for whatever reason.
If you had paid up they have to give it to you. |

Unfortunately yes, it will be in the small print of your original contract. This is done by all insurance company's, this way any new ones you approach will deem you a bad payer if you tell them that your NCB cert. has been withheld. Sorry for the bad news but i'm afraid they have you by the short and curlies! |

Certainly - its their money you owe them! You are able to reinsure without NCB for the time being so they aren't depriving you of that ability. |
