tristalelyn | Can anybody recommend a good HEALTH insurance company? We can't afford our employer's plans...? |
We just got out of the military and no longer have tri-care benefits. Our employers charge well over $500 per month for a healthy family of 3 (2 20 somethings and a 1 year old). Unfortunately, we can't afford anywhere close to that. We can't continue to go without medical insurance. Our son will need vaccinated next month, and I worry how to pay for our health should anything happen to any of us. We can't afford high deductables or outrageous copayments. Any hope for us? Our income bracket is approximately $35,000 in the state of Colorado.
Any suggestions? |

You'll want to visit a local independent agent. This person knows the market in your area and can find a policy to fit your budget. Don't be afraid of a higher deductible. With most individual policies the deductible normally come into play when you go into the hospital. You have the doctor visits and well baby care without having to first pay the deductible; you'll just pay the co-pay.
Be very wary of medical discount cards. They are not regulated by the Department of Insurance nor do the people that sell them need to be licensed. This means you have little recourse when you have problems with the plan. If you are tempted by the low price and claims of “save up to 80%” be aware that very few doctors actually take these cards. It does you little good if you have to drive 4 hours to find a doctor that will accept the card. Montana couldn’t find any doctors in the whole state that actually took the card and only one dentist who was on probation for unlawful activities so they banned the sale of the card and fined the company. See this link http://www.insurancejournal.com/news/west/2006/11/22/74554.htm for more information. Many other states are starting to ban these cards as well.
Before signing up with any discount plan get a list of doctors. If they won’t give you a list consider it to be a scam. Call the doctors on the list to make sure they’re still taking the card (many don’t even know that they’re listed as a provider) and that they’re accepting new patients. |

Yes, well, family coverage on your OWN will cost $800 to $1100 per month.
Unless you're looking for just major medical coverage - with a $5,000 deductible, then maybe you can find it for about $250 a month.
YOu can't walk into a car dealership and buy a brand new Cadillac for $25. Health insurance is the same way - YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.
Beware health discount plans. They sound too good to be true - and they aren't. Most providers don't take them. |

You're not likely to find anything on the private market that's a better deal than an employer plan. (Especially not if you're stating that you can't afford high deductibles or copays.)
A group plan will almost always give you better coverage for the money. Especially since group plans have certain legal protections that individual plans don't.
Don't fall for the "discount card" scam - you're just as likely to negotiate the same discount with your medical provider yourself, rather than paying one of those companies for a card that might essentially be useless. (Providers rarely take them, etc.) |

Try Blue Cross/Blue Shield. They should have a plan for you that you can base off of your income. |

You'll be able to get a good policy for around $300 to $350/month. You can see all of your options here...
http://www.insuranceshoppers.net/instant-health-insurance-quotes.html
Stay away from companies like World, Mega, or Midwest. You'll want to go with more reliable companies like Anthem Blue Cross, Humana, Aetna, United Healthcare, or Kaiser. (Cigna doesn't offer individual/family coverage in Colorado, just large group)
Also, make sure you have an agent of record to help you out. It costs the exact same to buy health insurance directly from the insurance company or from a broker, so you might as well have them there to help you find the right plan and also if you have problems with billing or claims after you have the policy. |

My family is pretty healthy and I cant get insurance for less than $800 per month in Virginia for a family of 3.
Technically I can get a policy for $150 a month that has me pay about $10,000 a year before they will give me back a dime, but thats not any better than self insuring.
Stick with the employer's plan. Try to talk to their HR about getting rid of certain of his employee benefits and taking less from you for insurance, they might deal.
