My husband of 24 yrs died last week of cancer. We had no life insurance. He was able to keep making our house payments until last month. August. '07. I work full time and I can't make the mortgage on my income but intend to get a 2nd job. My kids age 20 and 21 who are full time college students are against me getting the 2nd job. I was told by social security that I can't get survivor benefits until I'm 60. I am 49. Husband was 51 and on insurance from his job and social security disability during the latter part of his illness. My 21 yr old son has epilepsy, Tourettes Syndrome and OCD. He has run up alot of medical debt for me although he is on my insurance plan at my job. Can I get any help from SS other than the $255 death benefit? Thanks. |

If the kids are full time college students, they may be able to draw the social security benefits. That probably won't help you much tho.
If the house payment is more than you can afford, you may want to think about selling and buying something you can afford. |

You might be able to get some benefits for the 21 year old son if he's considered disabled. If he's able to attend college full time though, he might not qualify as disabled.
Call them again and see if there's anything you can apply for due to his situation. Other than that, they told you right.

You cannot get survivor SS benefits until you turn 61. You are in the black hole period of Social Security. Your epileptic son may be able to collect benefits but it will be only for him to use how he wants.
This shows the reason people with children should have life insurance.

Your older son (who "has epilepsy, Tourettes Syndrome and OCD") may qualify for disability benefits. These are for him, not you, but they can be used to pay his medical bills, so that you do not have to do so. |

Your kids are too old, and you are too young. Have you checked with his employer to see if there was a group life policy in place?
Also, your 21 year old - is he receiving social security as a disabled child?? He might be eligible, if you haven't signed him up yet, under dad's benefit level.
Sorry about your loss. I can't imagine what you're going through right now. But I agree with your kids . . . hold off on that second job a month or two - it won't make much difference. |

i'm going through the same thing. i'm over 50 and disabled yet social security lied to me and said i wasn't entitled to his benefits. he left me cobra benefits and i don't need mine but they said i can't opt for his because i'll lose my medicare. again, they lied. NEVER GO TO A SOCIAL SECURITY ALONE!!! TAKE SOMEBODY WITH YOU NEVER SIGN ANYTHING IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUBTS. I have to appeal now and financially, i don't knw what is going to happen to me financially |

that is completely wrong. you can get survivor's benefits if you're disabled and over 50! |
