brunelscooby | Can anyone help? UK only please? |
I am 33 weeks pregnant this Thursday and live in Glasgow. I had a distressing call about my father who lives in Canada (in intensive care, bleeding on the brain), I want to fly home tomorrow but I am having trouble getting travel insurance. I contacted the post office to get info from them but they don't provide it after 32 weeks. Is there anyone else that you can suggest? Even though I am still a Canadian citizen, i am not coverd there. Thanks in advance. |

I am an insurance broker offering a range of policies and check on pregnancy terms.
To be honest 32 weeks is the latest I have ever seen. Some websites state that airlines won't take people over 32 weeks pregnant - others say that they will with a letter.
---------------
Comment on BBC Website
The risks of flying late in pregnancy increase rapidly as you near term. Apart from the general effort and tiredness, dehydration, jetlag and possible increased risk of thrombosis (proven only to be linked to the cramped seating rather than actual act of being in an airplane), you may also find that your tickets and/or travel insurance is invalidated if you travel after 32 weeks (and if your return is delayed for any reason this may put you over the limit).
I work on air ambulances bringing people back from foreign countries and see women who have travelled when heavily pregnant and suffered from complications such as ante-partum haemorrhage. They're stuck for the rest of their pregnancy in a foreign country, worry over the neonatal care their baby may receive and then find they must pay their own medical bills because they didn't check their insurance.
Make extra sure of every logistical detail, on the flight drink plenty of water, get up frequently and in between try to rest, then enjoy your holiday.

I am really sorry over the dilemma you are in and hope that you can find a satisfactory solution to two such horrible choices. |

I think you would need to contact an independent intermediary about this - search for one in the Yellow Pages. In the UK, the Post Office is not an independent insurance broker; they only provide travel insurance from one insurer (Fortis); they don't have access to the full market. |
