More than do pay up when you claim as the party who is making the claim, they tend to be a bit retarded at following up other insurance companies if someone hits you (it took them just under 9 months to re-coup costs after someone drove into my car when it was parked. It came down to the fact that the overseas telephone operator did not understand my Scottish accent when notifying them in the first instance. The prick wrote down that I had caused the accident.)
Anyways, shop around on the AA website for insurance - they tend to be rather good too, but, do ask if they employ overseas telephone staff - without sounding racist, they really are not good enough to take this type of phone call as mistakes happen too easily.

All insurence companys are good, BUT YOU MUST READ ALL THE SMALL PRINT. And you must not tell any lies (Not one) then they will no choice then to pay up.

insurance companies only pay out as a last result ,you need a lawyer to read and understand there terms before you sign anything

Norwich Union Direct paid out quickly when I claimed last year. I was impressed at first: I got a courtesy car I wasn't expecting, and they arranged for the repair quickly.
Unfortunately, their garage didn't do the best of fixes, so make sure you check the car over carefully before you sign off on the repairs.
welcome news
Go and see an insurance broker and get a decent policy!
All insurers will pay up subject to policy limits - but a broker will advise you on which companjies a) they think handle claims well and b) have good policy limits.
Just remember that if you buy direct from an insurance company and there is a problem then you are on your own - if you go through a broker then they will help you.
