tom j | Can hospitals find out if you are insured under your parents plan if you don't tell them? |
Additional Details i dont want my parents to know that i had to go to the ER for something theyd probably disown me for, so i want to avoid having to use their insurance. i am not a minor.

(revising answer slightly since you clarified that you are not a minor)
I pointed out in your other question that your parents CANNOT pick and choose what they will "let" you use their insurance for. If you're on the plan and have already received services, your parents do not have the legal right to say "sorry, you can't have it billed to the insurance."
But to answer this question specifically...sure, its possible that the hospital can find out you're insured under your parents. Is it likely? Probably not. But still possible...if you've ever received services at that hospital before OR if you've been treated by a doctor affiliated with that hospital system, they could possibly already have your parents' insurance info on file.
(here's the edited part)...Since you're not a minor, you have the right to request confidential communication from the health insurance company. (even minors who meet a certain age requirement have this right) Call the insurer and ask for yourself. If you request confidential communications from the insurer, this means that your parents cannot receive any information regarding claims filed for you...even if the policy is in their names, they can't ask questions and receive information about your claims.
I wouldn't ordinarily advocate "hiding" things from your parents, but why get screwed for an ER bill when you possibly have coverage? (presuming that alcohol related stuff isn't excluded from your policy) If the bills haven't started coming in yet, you'd be shocked at how much ER charges can be...don't ruin your credit if you have the opportunity to get the charges covered.
Call the insurance company yourself and ask...you're entitled to call for yourself about your own medical issues if you're on the plan. |

No but if you are under 18 years old the hospital is required to obtain your parents' permission to treat you.
I am a CCU/ER nurse x 10 years: Federal law requires adult permission to treat a minor.
If you are 19 - 24 years old, simply do not offer your parents' health insurance information.
There is no way for the health care facility to find that information out with HIPAA laws restricting information release. Good luck Sweetheart. |

Sure, if they want to, but if you pay cash, credit card or check they won't bother. |

Nope. Assuming you are wanting to go behind your parents back, you are safe. Just tell them you don't have insurance and you're just going to pay. BUT realize that there are things you can't do without your parents permission.. so that you may want to check on. Also, you almost ALWAYS get something in the mail later, bill, summary, etc. So your parents may get that & you may get caught. |

I think so. Why do you need to know this? |

No. It's up to YOU to provide accurate insurance information to the hospital. If you don't, you get billed directly for the services, and you'll have to pay. |
