Can i be put on my parents health insurance if i am not currently in school?
I've been making myself sick over this all...see here's the problem....I should still be in college, but because of money problems, I decided to take a semester off. I thought it wouldn't be a problem to get a full time job that has good benifits and of course, insurance so I didn't have to worry about that as the school year came back around. Now, I get told that everyone that was hired before the Christmas season at this particular store will not be able to come back after January 4th. I have two more days of working left. This means that...guess what! No insurance! No proof of schooling to send to my dad's insurance company. What do I do? I won't be able to go back to school until June of 2008. Can I be added to my parents insurance for some extra fee? Or is it highly against the stupid rules of me having to be in school? Please help because I am worrying myself sick of this...there are many things that I need the insurance for, like dental and eyecare. Thank you!
Additional Details
i'm 20 and i have 1 year of school left until i graduate.
my dad does know, and as far as he knows the insurance company says that i need to be in school full time. so even if i did go take a few classes it wouldn't help matters.
the problem is, i cannot afford to take 14 credit hours. thats thousands of dollars that i currently do not have although i have been saving up and haven't spent a dime because i have been looking forward to finishing up school.
i was told when i was hired (at Target) that i would get at least 30 hours a week after Christmas. and now they are telling everyone they are cutting hours and the ones that were hired are not to come back. it's really shitty if you ask me. i've been treated really badly there.

As long as you are under 18 years old

If your dad's insurance policy says that dependents of a certain age need to be full time students to be eligible, then that's pretty cut and dry. Either you're a full time student and on the policy, or you're not a full time student and off the policy. (There are no exceptions or extra fees you can pay, etc.)

You can either elect COBRA, if offered, or try to purchase an individual policy until you go back to school. (If you qualify for one, of course. If you have a lot of medical issues, then an individual policy can reject you.)

Or, you could try finding another job with benefits. If you're not going to be back in school until June and you're not going to be working at Target anymore, you'll need to do something with your time. (And, of course, since you mentioned money problems I presume you'll be needing to find another job.)

P.S. Sometimes there can be a lag in the time it will take your father's insurance company to show you as canceled. Don't make the mistake of presuming that this means you're still covered though - the paperwork catches up eventually, and if you've accumulated any medical expenses in the meantime you can be held liable.

There are a few options. You must be a FT student to be covered as a dependent. You weren't clear as to how you are covered now?? If you are covered under Target's insurance plan, you can elect Cobra. This means you pay each month for your coverage. By federal law, they must offer it to you at your own expense. Take the Cobra. It's better coverage and less expensive than Individual coverage. This will give you more time to find another jobe. You didn't mention what state you are in, NJ has dependent age 30 coverage. If you are in NJ let me know, I can give you more info.

Typically this is the case, you can't be on your parents insurance unless you are in school, at your age. If you were younger, of course, it would work.

The best thing to do is make sure that is correct by calling the insurance company. If you can't stay on your parent's insurance, call a local agent who works with multiple companies in your area. They will be able to help you through this and help you get the best deal.

For free health insurance quotes, and to connect with a local agent who can help you through this, fill out a quote form at http://www.myinsurancequotes.net.

I was in the exact same boat as you were several years ago and then I got into a relationship and got on my significant other's plan without paying any extra fee at all.

Unles you have a significant other or if this scenario happens to you, I suggest looking over the exact rules/laws of health insurance, because I always thought age was more of a factor than school status, and even then should they not give you any grace periods? I'd call up the insurance company or have your parents call them up and just ASK them. It's that simple, ask if you can be put back on the policy and you'll get your answer right then and there. Stop the curiosity, it's stressing you all out. This is of course if your parents comply and want to be helpful, if not and they leave you on your own, then you have a really tough battle to face.

If all else fails, there's always charity care, and other options as well.

Many doctors/hospitals also have extended payment plans for any bills really.

The picture isn't all bleak, there are options but you have to be proactive and stop worrying. Start researching and making calls,

NOW!

Cobra is offered but wayyy expensive if let go from your job. Outside of that, the only way your covered under your dad's insurance is if you are a full time student and under the age of 25. But then again its based on your father's insurance coverage. Basically, he needs to review the benefits information for dependants specific w/ his employer. Or contact the insurance company to verify. But if you have to submit proof...well that there tells you, your out of luck until you get back into school.

If you are a minor, yes...if you are over 18 years old, no.

It's that simple.

The one sure way to find out is to call the insurance company. Is there some reason why your dad can't find out for you, like he doesn't know you dropped out of school?

If I had to say yes or no, I'd have to say that you are sunk as far as insurance goes. You probably won't even be able to get back on even if you do go back to school.

I find it hard to believe that where you are working didn't tell you that the job was just for the holiday season. But then again, you should have been able to figure that out for yourself.
