This has NOTHING to do with what state you live in.
It has to do with what insurance company your parents have. Most insurance companies will cover a minor child until they are age 23 if the child remains a full-time college student, excluding summers.
My question to you is this:
WHY would you want to pay for your own health insurance if your parents can carry you on theirs?
I can assure you from personal experience that it is EXTREMELY expensive to go that route, and your best bet is to stay under the coverage of your parents and reimburse them for your part of the premium if you choose. |

What kind of insurance. Medical or auto?
Either way, at 18 you should be able to contract for your own auto or medical insurance.
If you go on your own for auto, I would say it would be much higher than if you are on your parents policy. So it may be better to get added to your parents policy, and if they want you to pay, just pay the incremental cost. |

sure you can...but it isn't going to cost you anything if you remain under your parents.
If you're just concerned about your parents finding out about your medical care, call the # on your insurance card and tell them. Ask them to send your EOBs (Explanation of Benefits) to an alternate address (be it your school addr or whatever). The have to honor your request due to privacy laws (HIPPA Act). |
