Can i qualify for medicaid if i'm NOT pregnant and still live @ home?
I'm 23 and graduated from college in june, but cannot find a job with medical benefits. so i currently work a part time job for minimum wage and live with my parents.... but when i graduated, my medical benefits under their health plan were also cut off since i was no longer a "full time student"

i'm trying to fill out the medicaid application for my state but i'm becoming confused when they ask the "head of household" question. because in parenthasis next to head of household it says " (you) "
... but technically i'm not the head of household am i? and it asks how much money other people who live at the address make... not that i'm currently in the situation, but if i were, what if i moved out and got a roommate... why would how much my roommate makes be any of their business (or mine, really for that matter) if i'm not related to my roommate in anyway.

they also ask questions like "how much cash is on hand for each person in the household" ... as in right now? well i have 0 cash on me right now. but i could easily go to the bank and take some out. i mean do they want me to count my change? i don't know what to make of the question... i could have 0 on me right now, but 20 bucks in less than 5 minutes if i walked down to the bank and took some out...

my main question though is do i even sound like i would qualify? i've heard that it's extremely difficult to qualify, but at the same time i was watching MTV true life i'm addicted to shopping or some crap like that and there was a girl on there that was 19 and blew thousands and thousands of dollars on shopping sprees everyday. yet she was on medicaid and it actually covered her "shopping therapy"... if people who can afford to spend thousands on buying clothes everyday can qualify, why does it seem so hard for other people to?!

You'd have to apply. It's HOUSEHOLD income, so your parents' income counts on the application, too.

You're not a head of household.

Household income matters, because if you're shacking up with someone, and they make decent money, it's not fair to all the rest of the taxpayers to cover YOUR health benefits. People try to defraud the welfare system ALL THE TIME.

Cash on hand INCLUDES bank account balances. And it would include your parents. Most likely, if your parents aren't dirt poor, you're not going to qualify.

Depends on your state. But usually, if the other people in the house are parents or siblings, their assets and income would be counted. When they ask about cash, they mean the money in the bank. If you have questions about it, there should be a phone number on the application to call for assistance-or re-post you question with what state you live in. For some states, you have to meet the federal disability guidelines to qualify as well as meet the financial eligibility. Since you live with your parents, most likely you won't qualify unless their income is at the federal poverty level.

As far as the girl who qualified, she was under the age of 21, so the requirements may be different.

if you live with your parents their income level must qualify in order for you to qualify.

It is extremely difficult to qualify. A family of three has to make about $12000 a year or less for the adults in the household to qualify. You have to be really, really, practically-living-under-bridges poor to qualify.

And they want to know about othe people in your household - because if you're living in someone else's house, then clearly you're much much better off than someone with your earnings trying to actually survive, paying rent and such.

I doubt you qualify if you're living with your parents. Just cross your fingers that you don't need a lot of medical care before you get a better job.

If something DOES happen, you can file for assistance (not the same as medicaid) after the fact, which can reduce the amount of your hospital bills by quite a bit.

Go ahead and fill out the application - you won't know for sure until you do. Just be truthful. (They aren't looking for a lousy 20 bucks in your bank - they want to know if you have thousands in savings). To lie, and essentially commit fraud, may block you from benefits that you could need later.

------

P.S. - Medicaid does not pay you anything - it just gives you access to free medical care. So that bit about someone's "Medicaid" paying for shopping sprees is a bunch of bunk. (That, or whatever public assistance she was getting was something other than Medicaid)

I live in michigan, my girlfriend was trying to get medicaid and i was going to get it, but i think somewhere in the booklet it says something about not being able to get it if youre over 21 (unless youre pregnant or something)

i could be wrong though, if i am please let me know, because i would also like to get medicaid, but gave up when i read that

What is your college degree in? If you can't find a job in that field, then why not try STATE EMPLOYMENT... it's not shamefull to be a civil servant... and they do pay medical benefits... The economy is really awful right now and it's not fair to our young people trying to find jobs out there ... and a LOT of the older workers are leaving work LATER because they fear what the economy will do to their retirement funds OR, their funds already took a beating and they have to work longer to gain that money back... which means jobs that COULD be open NOW for the younger people are still filled with Older workers who can't retire... all around it's a CATCH 22 and it's really sad... but then you have big companies outsourcing to MEXICO and INDIA all the time which also takes jobs away from the younger worker....but as far as medical insurance for you goes, you MAY have to go without OR sign up for one of those special programs they have on line that cost about $150 a month out of YOUR pocket....

I was on Medicaid when I lived at home with my mom and I worked P/T. I think if your parents meet the income guidelines (low income) and you do not make more than $800/month... you can still get Medicaid. I don't know what state you live in but this is what I know about NY state law. Hope I helped somewhat. Good luck
