Becky | Can insurance companies legally require you to give them your social security number? |
Need ASAP, Thanks |

No, they can not require you to give your social - and if they are trying to, the person you are working with does not know what they are talking about. Also, certain companies are still going to try to run your credit check with just your name and date of birth. They are going to get a report back, but will it be an accurate reading? If you have a common name (maybe the same as your father), will it even pull the right person? It really is in your best interest to give it as it will give the most accurate report and place you at the right level. |

Only if you want them to insure you.
They need it so they can pull your credit report, depending on what it looks like will affect your rate. |

No. But if you don't give it to them, they don't have to write you a policy.
If you don't live in CA, and you want a homeowners or auto policy, you're not going to find a company willing to give it without a credit check - which they need your SS number for.
Or rather, you CAN find one - Leader Infinity will give you auto coverage without a credit check, if you request - but you get the absolute highest rates - same as if you have a 200 credit score. |

No, but if you don't they either won't write you or they'll charge you the highest premiums. Socials are used to run checks and see about claims you've filed in the past, if you have a history of fraud, that kind of thing. So if they can't access that kind of info, they have to assume you're a risk and increase premiums accordingly. |

A lot of insurance companies run your credit to base your premium price therefore they need the SSN to get your score. It is common practice to provide your ssn#. |

I work for an Insurance company. We always ask for soc.#'s, but if you don't want to give it, we can write a policy. You just will not receive any discounts, and will not be able to go on a pay plan. Meaning, you would pay the highest rate & also have to pay the policy in full (no monthly payments). |
