Domestic Partner coverage extends beyond homosexual couples in Connecticut. Hetero couples can be extended the same coverage. This would be discrimination otherwise. We have certain criteria before the coverage can be offered. Some carriers allow it, some don't. Some companies allow it, some don't. Everybody has to be treated fairly - all or nothing.
If the Insurer offers it, and the company allows it, the a sworn affidavit must be signed by the employee, stating that,:
1. Each party is the sole Domestic Partner of the other.
2. Each party is at least 18 years of age
3. Both parties currently share a common legal residence for at least 12 months prior.
4. Neither party is married to another person
5. Both parties are in a relationship of mutual support, caring, and commitment and intend to remain in such a relationship for the indefinite future
6. Neither party is related to the other by adoption or blood to a degree of closeness that would bar marriage in the state in which they reside
7. Both are responsible for basic living expenses
8. Domestic partners must have in effect and provide proof of any one of the following:
- designation of a partner as beneficiary for life insurance and retirement contract; or
- designation or the partner as primary beneficiary in the subscriber's will; or
documentation by one partner designating the other partner as his/her agent for personal relationship issies, or health care decisions, or health care agent.
9. Neither party has filed a termination of domestic partnership within the preceding 2 months.
If you meet the criteria, then it is possible, but you will have to check with your human resources department first. |

depends on your company. some companies will pay health costs for domestic partners (gay and lesbian, heterosexuals too)
but i don't think a roommate is considered adomestic partner. |

most health insurance plans will not let you enroll a non-dependent on your health insurance. A very few employer sponsored plans will let you add a "domestic partner" - which means a same-sex relationship, NOT just a roommate. They frequently ALSO require you to name that person as the beneficiary of any retirement plan you also have. |
