homehunter | Can my son drive under my insurance? |
My 33 year old son needs a car for work. Can I let him drive under my insurance ? What am I liable for - accidents? parking tickets - speeding tickets? |

you need to put him on your policy. When he wrecks a car or gets a ticket your pricewill go up.
33 years old... Cut the cord and tell him to move out of your basement |

If he temporarily borrows your car, you're covered.
But for him to be covered, he needs to buy a policy. And if he uses your car for any length of time, then you probably need to add him to your policy. The insurance contract you have will state those requirements. Or, better yet, just call the agent |

He could drive your car and be covered under most insurance policies, however I WOULDN'T recommend it.
I'm currently working a claim with similar circumstances. Retired father lets his grown 40 yr old son borrow his car for the week. The son was seemingly straight. He picked up a few people and went riding around one night, lost control and flipped 6 times. 1 passenger died, 2 others were life flighted and were in bad shape for a while. NOW......everything the father has ever worked for is in jeopardy. Since the father is jointly responsible for the accident, the injury lawyers representing the passengers are going after everything that man has...house, vehicles, retirement accounts, and investments.
Needless to say, I would recommend that you tell your son to pay cash for a beater and get his OWN policy. He's a grown man and needs to take care of himself, otherwise, you could end up paying for it BIG TIME!! |

Assuming he's licensed, you have to add him as a driver on your insurance policy in order to "let him drive under your insurance." As a grown adult, he should be liable for all of the above (but if you're asking what's covered under insurance from your list of questions - just accidents). |

Call your agent. You didn't explain enough for anyone to give you an intelligent answer. Whose car would he be driving?
If he owns the car, you can't insure it. You don't have an insurable interest in his property. If it's your car, and he drives it with your permission, you are covered-under certain circumstances. Does he live with you? See what I mean? Lots of unanswered questions--all can be answered by your insurer. As far as your question regarding if you are responsible for tickets-if the car is registered to you, yes. If you have it registered to your son, then no. That is not an insurance question, really-it is a liability question-insurance doesn't cover speeding tickets or parking tickets. Call your agent or insurer directly. Hope this helps. Personal questions regarding coverage issues can't be answered in a forum like this. Only you know what your policy says. Read it. Also, each state has different laws. So, you can't get accurate information here. |
