Usually with individual insurance, at least in my state, there are limitations on coverage. For example, you could purchase Rx coverage, but there may be a $1000 annual cap. Check to make sure that you are fully aware of all imitations and caps.
I would suggest you looking at the cost of HMO plans (Copays) and then look at HSA-qualified high deductible health plans. Typically, the cost of the HMO is higher than the cost of the HDHP and the deductible combined.
After giving you that little bit of advice, I realize that you may not feel like you will have all the answers to make a good decision. I strongly suggest that you contact a local, independent agent to fully explain your options and how the plans work.
By the way, I can't imagine that you would be able to beat the $200 per month that your mother is paying now, but if the problem is the benefits offered, then it may be worth the look.
Oh, and don't cancel your existing coverage until you have been accepted for a new plan. |

I'd do Traditional Blue, or Blue Value with 80/20 coinsurance, and a 500 or higher deductible.
Some of their plans will look cheaper, but they may not work for your area because of the PPO.
Go to an agent. It's the same price, and he/she should be able to tell you what's the best for your area with your family practioner.
Health insurance is FUN!!!.....not. |

I wish I could have healthcare for 200$ a month.
Really watch the co-payment, deductible and what % you have to pay of each bill even after those requirements are met. We pay 700$/month, plus a 20$ co-pay each visit, plus 1000$ deductible on each person and every bill we owe 20% until we reach 20,000$ per person and then Blue cross pays 100%.
Be very careful.
I can't believe that you can do better than 200$ month. |

Make sure that it's an HMO or PPO rather than a "discount" plan.
A "discount plan" means that you pay them a chunk every month, have to pay in full to your medical provider, and then they will give you the rate (usually about 40%) back after they verify your claim...big rip off, if you ask me. |
