Insuring the ships & goods crossing the ocean is the beginning of the insurance industry as we now know it.
BUT.... the Egyptians had their own kind of burial insurance? The would build their pyramids & store their valuables with the corpse.
Also, Pirates wore a gold earring to insure there was funds to return to their family. |

In the 1500's, when the Europeans were coming to the new found land, they brought with them the slaves....or what they called Cargo. When the ships began to sink, not only would they loose their ship, but the Cargo as well.
Along the European shores, prior to the ships taking voyage, the captains of the ship would draw up contracts asking for people to invest in the cargo/ship. He would pay them to help him in the event of a loss. This way, the transportation costs would be spread out among several people and not 1 person would be devastated by the loss. They would write their name under the contract - hence the term underwriter.
When the cargo would arrive on the other end, without harm, the underwriter's would have profited by taking money without loosing the cargo. If it sank or part of the cargo was lost, then the underwriters would pay out by the percentage they were paid.
Lloyd's of London was the name of the company and they still do business the same way today. Very Profitably might I add. |

Surely. Insurance started back in the discovery days in Europe. Boats would go across the sea, and some would make it back, some would not. Some would lose cargo, some would not. So the wealthy people (who owned these boats) decided its not fair that they hold the burden of whether those boats return. So they pooled together money (like an insurance policy) and if your boat got ruined, you could draw from that pool of money to replace it. They formed a well known group called "Lloyd's of London" and they started insuring lots of things. To this day Lloyds of london still insures people, but not for your typical needs. If you hear about a super model insuring her legs, or Jeff Bagwell of the astros, the team insured his salary in the case he gets injured, those unique cases are still handled by lloyds of london. Basically its a bunch of rich people, who will let you pay them to absorb their risk. |

Goes back a long, long time. Originated when people shipping goods from one continent to another decided that they would band together (financially) to insure that if delivery did not occur for one reason or another they could be (financially) made "whole" again.
Then later on in the US farmers did a very similar thing protecting their buildings so in the event of a disaster (fire, windstorm, lightning, etc) they could have money from the "neighborhood pool" to rebuild. |
