Can the insurance of a car I own cover 16 year old girl driver?

The first question is whether this girl is a member of your household. If she is not, and she is not a regular user of the car, (e.g. you buy the car and give it to her to use), then she would be covered as a permissive user like anyone else you let borrow your car.

If she is in your household or a regular user, you should notify your insurance carrier. Yes, it will cost you more, but if you don't, you risk having your coverage denied.

If you decide not to tell your insurer about her, and she gets in a wreck, your insurer will discover this during the claim investigation. If they can show that they would not have accepted your policy if they knew about this driver, or that they would have charged a substantially increased premium to insure this risk, they can void the coverage for this claim. This would leave you on the hook for the damage.

Make her get a job to pay for the increased premium. It will teach her an important life lesson.

In all of the areas where I live, you would have to call the company and ad her as a driver if she is a member of your household. To find out whether a 16 year old who does not live with you can borrow the car from time to time, read your policy.

Some insurance companies insist that younger drivers be added to your policy even if they do not live at home if you are a parent, so you might want to be a little cagey when calling your agent.

If a driver who should have been added has an accident, the insurance company might deny all claims arising from that accident, so be very careful with this.

Both drivers and cars are insured. If you lend your car to someone else, most policies will cover YOU. That is, if she gets into an accident, your own liability would be covered by your insurance. The victim could still sue the driver separately (though who knows if it makes sense to sue a 16 year old).

But that's if you lend the car to an outsider. If the 16 year old lives in the same house as you, you are supposed to have coverage for all the drivers in the house. Your insurance company *might* refuse coverage if you didn't tell them that there was another licensed driver in the same household. A lot depends on how good a customer you have been all along. If you have had a policy with them for 20 years and never had a claim, they are more likely to be flexible.

Bottom line: the safest thing is to call the insurance company and ask them whether they would cover your particular situation. Good luck!!

If you list her as an operator!! If she's not listed, and a regular user, OR a family member, it's likely she'd not be covered - and possible your car wouldn't, either.

ME
If she borrows your car w/ permission she would be covered. If the insurance company finds out that this person has regular use of your car, they will add her to your policy. If this is your daughter you're referring to, by definition she is covered but if you don't add her to your policy, the insurance company can deny the claim because you did not disclose all licensed drivers in your household.

crickette
Your daughter? You will need to talk to your insurance agent. There may be an additional fee to add the girl to your insurance policy.

Well it depends on what country you're in, what the legal age to drive is, does your insurance only cover you (the insured) or other drivers aswell, and even if it does cover other drivers, does it only cover other drivers who are named?
Ring your insurer and ask them as they're the ones who will know all the answers relating to your insurance
