Yes, that's why many uninsured people go to the emergency room for a sore throat, cold, etc as they can't afford to go to a regular doctor.

Yes. Emergency rooms have the responsibility to stabilize a person's condition before the next step in that person's care is decided.

You will find that you can go to the Emergency Room without insurance however; you will be met with resistance from the hospital clerks when you check in.

Regardless of popular belief, Hospitals are in the business of money. They will bill you and put you in collections if you don't pay.

The ER will see you since they are liable if they reject services to you. A recent case came up where an uninsured died in the ER waiting room. The hospital is now in a major legal issue over it.

Yes, the ER is required to treat you, regardless of ability to pay. Ask about the Health Care assurance Program (HCAP). It helps people with low incomes pay for their health care.

Okay. Here's the deal. ERs are required to provide care to make sure a patient is not in danger. If you go to the ER with a hangnail, they're going to patch you up and send you on your way. If you go because you have a limb hanging off, they're going to do whatever they have to do for you.

Rest assured - you WILL be billed later for the services. If you are employed in any way, you should make an effort to pay - at least some of it. Otherwise, it will screw your credit when they send you to collections.

Unfortunately the ER is where most of the uninsured go... perhaps it is because they are also uninformed.

The general pattern is that these people wait until their symptoms become severe because they feel like they can't afford to go to the doctor. The ER charges them hundreds or even thousands for what could have been an $80 visit to a doctor when their symptoms started. This further reinforces their belief that they can't afford health care.

In the Us if the Hospital is Non-profit or City, then they will see you and hope to resolve billing later at whatever you can handle.
If the Hospital is private (for profit) they can turn you away. They do not have to, but they can. (Many accept a certain amount of ((Charity)) work per year as write offs. )

If it's a life threatening emergency, by law, the hospital is required to either treat you, or stabilize you and transfer you to another hospital.

Of course, you still are responsible for the bill.

If it's NOT a life threatening emergency, they do NOT have to treat you - they can refer you to a regular doctor, who can require payment before he treats you.

if you make payments each month, no matter how small, a hospital cannot send it to collections. sending it to collections is merely a way to scare you into paying the entire bill at once. i was billed a large amount for an emergency room stay, and was only able to pay small payments sometimes. they hospital tried to send it to collections, but my lawyer said all you have to do is send a letter to collections saying you do not want to have any further contact from them via mail or phone, and they can no longer contact you. after sending the letter, i have continued to send the hospital payments, and i have not heard anything else from collections.
