Why would you be afraid to tell him? That's a perfectly normal thing to do. You might find a company that would write a small policy without a statement form the insured, but anything beyond minimal is going to require a signed medical history and statement at minimum.

There are very few circumstances where you CAN take a life policy out on someone without their permission. This isn't one of them. Furthermore, I don't see why you would assume you'd be responsible for the things he leaves behind if he doesn't even know you exist. Talk to a lawyer in his state if you are unsure about this.
