No, except in the very few states that allow you to "stack" uninsured/underinsured motorist coverages, or medical payments.

For the collision, comprehensive, and liability coverages, the back of your policy says how they'll pay - usually either on a pro-rata basis with the other company, or on an excess basis.

bundysmom
No.....why would you? Your policy says they either pay EXCESS to other insurance for the same coverage OR they pay their pro-rata share. If for some reasons they both say the same thing, for instance they both say they are EXCESS--then the deciding factor on who is primary is usually determined by when each of the policies was purchased right down to the second and/or when the vehicle was added to the policy.

Some mentioned stacking....stacking is where you add the coverage available on 1 policy for multiple vehicles. So if you have 3 vehicles on 1 policy and your UM limits are 15/30, when you stack your UM limits are now 45/90. It does not have anything to do with multiple policies.

You can have two different policies as long as they are on different cars. You cannot claim two policies on th same car.

I know in the state I live in car insurance is very high. I am not sure anyone could afford two differt policies.

Your problem can come by being accused of insurance fraud if you claim the different policies. Both companys could refuse to pay because of possible fraud and then you would be left holding the bag.

I know sometimes insurance policies can overlap if you choose to change companies. Some people will buy the new policy and have it in place prior to the other policy expiring.

No. In fact, I think it's illegal.
