Can you get insurance on musical equipment?
i have 4 guitars and a marshall amp.....

INS CSR-L.A. County
Yes you can. It is called a Personal Articles Floater, or Personal Articles Policy. It covers your specifically scheduled articles anywhere in the Contintental US, Territories, and Canada. Your average homeowners policy has limitations as to value, location, and cause of loss. Your home policy will not handle "mysterious disappearance" (IE: you load it in your car, and when you get to where you are going, it is gone), or if someone drops a soda in your amp and it blows up. Most home policies cover theft and fire only. Floater policies are broader.

It is not usually that expensive, but you have to have some way to value the equipment. Usually a sales receipt is sufficient, or an estimation based on similar equipment. Your agent can handle this for you.

Depending on whether it is your personal property (ie: not used in a business) it can be under a Personal Floater. If used for a business, it should be under a Commercial Floater.

Talk to your insurance agent who handles your auto and home. If you have homeowner's insurance or renters insurance, you may already have some coverage for these items or may be able to add it at little cost. Very doable.

Yes, you can. If it stays in your house and you don't use it for business, you can cover it under your renters or homeowners insurance pretty cheaply.

If you use it for business, you need an inland marine policy for it, and it will be more expensive. Contact a local, independent agent - like the guy that does your homeowners - for quotes.

Yes. Check your local music store; they probably have the information you need.

No doubt.

Yes.

You would want to schedule these items onto your homeowners or renters policy.

This is done by adding a "floater" to your policy.

Many people also schedule jewelry (like an engagement ring) or expensive cameras.

The floater will provide much better coverage at a much higher limit than what your standard homeowners/renters policy provides by itself.

If the guitars and amp are expensive and would be a hardship to replace - see about scheduling them on your policy. It's not that expensive and well worth it.

If you have a Homeowner's, Condo or Tenant's policy then you already have coverage as they are considered contents. Any claim would be subject to the policy deductible. If, however, you are playing the instruments for a fee (either in a band or solo) then you will have to find an insurer who will issue a Scheduled Property Rider (or similarly named endorsement) with permission to use the instruments for a fee (the rider is issued in conjunction with a Homeowner's, Condo or Tenant's policy). This is not always easy to acquire as it depends what kind of locations you play at. Speak with a local insurance broker/agent and I'm sure you will find one who can find an insurer who can help you.

sure you can. If you are using them for business (a band) you'll need a separate policy for them, called an Inland Marine policy. I know, stupid name, but that's the way it is. You need to check your homeowner's policy or tenant's policy for coverage. There may be coverage there also, but there may be a maximum limit.
