Can you get penalized for switching auto insurance after just getting auto insurance?
i currently am insured with geico, but i just got a quote through progressive and they gave me a better deal. i have had geico for only a month, and now i'm convinced i wanna change it. I'm just wondering if i will be penalized for changing it?
Check the cancellation conditions of your current policy.

It depends on the insurance company. Ask your agent, If the company guidelines consider that case. AAA insurance was half the cost of progressive for me. I got 16 different quotes and when I called back to verify the rates they all went up. Except AAA went down. The agent explained the company guidelines had just changed. State Farm was lower than Progressive as well. Had been a Progressive customer for 10 years.

You may lose your "policy fee" or any similar front end loads you paid to start your first policy. Some companies use a short-rate table, as opposed to a pro-rate table" to calculate the amount of coverage you will have if you cancel in midstream. Check with Geico.
Usually there are no penalties for changing; however, I recommend choosing a good company and staying with them instead of shopping for a better deal every renewal. You will get preferential treatment if you are loyal to a company in the event of a loss; they are not a likely to cancel you or rate you up.

The insurance company can not penalize you outright for switching carries however they may charge you a processing fee wich will be deducted from your return premium if applicable.
If your policy with Geico started 10-15-08 and you want to start with Progressive 11-15-08 and you already paid Geico 30% down payment, simply call or write then a letter (whichever they require) and request to cancel your policy effective 11-15-08 and they should cancel your policy Pro-Rata and refund you any applicable premium.
