Can you lend your car to someone, if they're not on your insurance?

of course. You don't think that you have to change your insurance policy every time you loan out your car.

Generally speaking, the insurance follows the car, not the driver. There are exceptions to this rule, though, so it is always safest to double check with your insurer.

For instance, if you loan your car to someone who lives with you but is not listed on your policy, you probably won't be covered if they get in an accident.

For people who don't live with you, you shouldn't have any problem unless you have a very restrictive policy for some reason.

As I said, it always pays to double check so you aren't sorry later.

Generally, anyone who is a member of the insured's household (or minor children) has to be named in the policy or there is no coverage for that person.

However, you can let people who are not in your household use your car and the coverage will apply while they use it. Most policies will exclude coverage if the borrower pays you for the use or if the use exceeds some time period.

Yes but if they crash it then your insurance won't cover it.

Sure, it's your car. You can lend it if you wish. But whether or not they will be covered by your insurance while driving it depends on the company who insures your car, and the policy you have.

Some insurance companies/policies cover anyone you give permission to drive your car, and they don't need to be specifically listed as a driver unless they are a regular operator of the vehicle, and/or a member of your household.

Some insurance companies only cover drivers you actually have listed in your policy. They can and will not only not cover the damages from the accident, they may even cancel your policy for not disclosing the unknown driver.

My advice is to not lend out your car. Why? Because you are legally responsible for what that person does while driving your car.

Even if you are insured and your policy covers other drivers you can be held liable for damages even beyond your policy limits (for example, if you have $25000 coverage if you hurt someone and your friend causes an accident where someone has $100000 in injuries).

I just don't think it's a good idea. But, to answer your question, you really need to ask your agent or read your policy.

Josh
Yes you can. Insurance covers the vehicle, not the driver. So your vehicle is insured no matter who drives it, as long as they are legally licensed. There are a couple of other answers before me you need to ignore, the one that said you won't be covered and the one that said you need o call your agent, namely. I am 110% positive of my answer, will stake my career on it.

I borrow my parents cars all the time. I was recently in an accident so I have to use theirs. And no, I'm not on either of their insurance policies. Just make sure they don't get pulled over...be safe.

Yes you can do whatever you wish, it's your property. But, if this person gets into an accident with your car in your name, and it is their fault, guess who could get sued?

mbrcatz
It depends. You're going to have to ask your agent.

If the person is a household member, you need to list them first. If they are NOT a household member, and don't borrow your car regularly (once a month, or 10X a year) then MOST of the time, no. But there ARE policies out there, that ABSOLUTELY say we only cover the listed drivers.

No one here knows how often the someone drives your car, or if they live with you, or if you have one of these very restrictive policies.

So go ask your agent.
