There are a lot of folks here answering no. While this may be correct legally, in the real world, I can tell you from personal experience this does happen.
First of all, it's incorrect to state that it's ALWAYS illegal. Most states permit spouse #1 to take out group insurance (for example, through their employer) on spouse #2. Spouse #2's signature is not required.
Outside the group insurance environment, there are many examples of shady life insurance contracts being taken out. Unfortunately, it's quite easy to falsify identification and pose as the proposed insured. When the policy is taken out, there typically must be some type of "insurable interest," which is also easily circumvented by dishonest individuals.
Many insurers will require a proposed insured's SSN. But they don't check to make sure the SSN given matches the name of the proposed insured; so a person could literally give any number. Also, insurers are sensitive to the fact that many folks don't give their SSN to anyone for any reason. So if a person refuses to give it, an insurer typically won't refuse to issue the policy. |

No...you can only get life insurance for yourself or someone who you have a l"insurable interest" with i.e. your spouse, or business partner. You would basically have to prove that you would suffer a financial loss if they died. You would definitely need their social security #. |

No you cannot. Yes their social security number is needed. If the person is of age, they have to give their permission. After all, it is their life.
If it is an elderly person of whom you have guardianship, you'll have to show proof as well. |

When I took out a life insurance policy, I had to have a guy come to my house and take blood, so he could decide how much of a health risk I was and whether I would likely drop dead in a year or so from some genetic condition. I think most people would notice if someone stabbed them in the arm with a big needle. |
