Can you take out a large insurance policy on someone without them knowing about it?
My daughter does not currently work, as she has 2 small children. Her husband works a lot of overtime in order to provide for them. He is also a type-1 diabetic and I worry about his health a lot. If something awful were to happen to him my daughter would lose everything. Alternatively if something happened to her, he'd have to quit working so much and pay childcare on top of that.

Is there a way I can get a life insurance policy on the two of them, making the other the beneficiary without their knowledge? I don't want them to think I'm meddling, but I also want to make sure my grandchildren can be properly cared for if the worst were to happen.

No you cannot do this. Each person who is pa party to a policy needs to know, actually must know about it. Do it as a favor for them and tell them you will pay the premiums. That is best. If they agree that is great and if they don't, that to is good. Before doing anything talk with them. Let them know this is bothering you.

Another option is to set up a trust fund for your daughter and her children. a certified financial planner would be able to help you set something up and you wouldnt have to tell them about it unless necessary. If nothing happens then it will make a nice college/wedding fund for the children down the road.

I don't think you can, but I don't believe you should even if it is possible. You are worried about being seen as meddling. How about if you tell them it is a gift (anniversary, Christmas, whatever) to help provide for their children in the event something were to happen to one of them. You could even have the proceeds go to a trust fund to further distance yourself from meddling.

B .
No. They would have to sign the application as the "insured" and go through medical questions to find what they are rated.
I think if you went to them and presented the problem as you have here, they may not be opposed to you paying for some term insurance on each other.

Introduce the policy as a gift for the benefit of the grandchildren. If you invest in permanent life insurance, it will build a cash value that the grandchildren can use later in life to help fund college, not entirely pay for it, but help fund it. Also consider insuring only your daughter, your rates will be astronomical due to her husbands Diabetes. If you feel it necessary to insure him as well look into a 20 year Term policy, the rates will be above average but manageable and it will cover the kids until college. Make sure when choosing a company you choose one that is AAA rated, and if you invest with permanent insurance make sure your getting the most bang for the buck.

Not if she's over 18 you can't. And not if HE'S over 18, either. The insured life has to sign the application, show identification when the company rep comes out to draw blood, saliva, and urine samples, and sign medical information releases. They'd notice that.

You need to sit down and talk with them, and not go behind their back. How would YOU like it, if your daugter tried to take a policy out on YOUR life without your knowledge/permission?

Or rather, that's the angle to go at . . .you tell them, they can take a policy out on you, and they give you permission to take policies out on them.
